Screwballs (1984)
Screwballs, Rafal Zielinski, 1983
Movie Review | Screwballs (Zielinski, 1983)
Despite the name of the genre, I feel like most boner comedies have some variety in their comedic ideas. Here, we have one scene after another of the barest minimum setup to qualify as a gag in the pursuit of some sort of sexual thrill. I assume the director spent the entire shoot nursing a chub behind the camera. I would honestly respect the movie’s single-mindedness if more of it was actually funny. Okay, I did laugh when the nerd’s dick got stuck in a bowling ball, but I think the movie had mostly beaten me into submission that far into the runtime.
Despite the conceptual flimsiness, this is more stylish than is usual for the genre, with the occasional interesting camera move or editing choice. These movies get a lot more tolerable when they have a decent female character, and I did enjoy the presence of Linda Speciale, a Rebecca De Mornay type who occasionally frustrates the boys’ schemes, although their obsession in spending the whole movie trying to sexually humiliate her pushed this into creepy territory even by the standards of the genre.
Despite the Americana dressing, this is an unmistakably Canadian production, thanks to the presence of Made In Canada’s Peter Keleghan, and a scene set at Toronto’s Filmores Gentlemen’s Club. (I’ve never been, I swear.) Writing credits go to Jim Wynorski and Lynda Shayne, proving that women are no less capable of writing prurient-minded attempted comedies with indefensible sexual politics than men.
