Wondering why it has a spoon *and* a stick? I would have thought those two ice cream delivery methods were relatively mutually exclusive...?

Well, it’s....it’s complicated but essentially the stick is pretty coated with chocolate and toppings too -- they haven’t quite worked out all the kinks yet I think. The way you do it is, you order the flavor of ice cream you want, then the dip you want (white chocolate, dark, milk, etc) and then the topping you want it dunked in. So the chocolate hasn’t 100% hardened by the time they hand it to you, and it’s just...a bit easier to eat with a spoon.

I mean, I was never against them, I just never HAD them as a kid, like I feel like they weren’t....around. And I still don’t see them on candy shelves or whatnot, I don’t know where one procures them other than bulk bags at halloween :D

And if all else fails, the pre-made guacamole is usually next to the dip and sour cream.

OH BUT -- don’t put premade guac in your sloppy joe. The point is to use the guac seasonings, you don’t want avocado in your sloppy joe.

I mean. Maybe you do, but it’s probably better to put slices on top rather than stir in guacamole. :D

It was pretty good! Needed a sauce, I think, because a bit dry on its own, but tasty nonetheless.

It just looks like it ‘cause you can’t see the scale, really -- that’s a single chopped up egg, sitting on about a quarter cup of rice :D

Strengthening the flavor of your syrup with celery seeds also a candidate for getting enough celery flavor into your jelery - if you’ve still got some syrup lying around toss in a teaspoon or so and leave it overnight (heat makes the extraction process faster but its /usually/ not necessary) and see how you like the taste

I’m gonna have to experiment with celery seeds for sure. I wanted to but all I had was celery salt, which....would not have gone well, I think. :D

as a bio graduate student, what's your opinion on the orgo requirement for all baby bio people?

fair disclaimer: i enjoyed organic chemistry.  admittedly, i enjoyed it the same way i imagine some people enjoy eating very very hot peppers (whoo!  that hurts!  amazing!), but whatever, i was into it.

i am of two minds.  

first mind: i believe biologists should have an awareness of molecular shit.  organic chemistry lays down a really valuable framework of how carbon-based structures act.  having that structure builds your scientific intuition, which in turn informs how good the hypotheses you make throughout your career will be.

second mind:  arbitrarily hard classes are shitty.  “you must be this smart to ride the ride” -some asshole who introduced the term ‘weedout course.’  organic chemistry classes are often arbitrarily hard, and the really punishing parts aren’t the most useful parts for biologists.

i've been reading tpk and dm is making me want to get snakebites and basically aspire to be her bc she's a brash cutie with a plan and a game to run! and it's adorable how patient everyone is and how much they want to have fun, a++++

gaming is all about HAVING FUN! i really want TPK to highlight the importance of fun in games, even games that seem really intimidating like d&d (i was sooooo intimidated when i started playing only a couple years ago!)

but yeah the goal of tpk is fun for everyone!! and im really glad that’s already coming across! :)

I love that I finally decided what to do after college and made a decision that I can now follow through! I've stopped waffling about my potential depression and anxiety and started dealing with how to approach those issues. I love how can rock black eyeliner and lip color like nobody's business, and that makes some days more bearable.

Man YOU KIDS WITH YOUR EYELINER EXPERTISE AND WHATNOT. I am always amazed at you guys who have strong eye makeup game! And I agree 100% about how it can carry you through a day - I've always considered makeup to be a kind of armor, as necessary as chainmail or warpaint when you need to feel protected. So go you for mastering it!

I'm so proud of you for figuring out what your next step is after college! That's a big decision to make and I think by deciding now, you've got that much of a head start on planning for it - so go you for being forward-thinking! And it's a really, really great thing that you're dealing with your depression and anxiety; I know that they can feel overwhelming and intrusive, like asshole roommates who've got no respect for boundaries. But you're awesome for taking steps tward kicking those assholes out (or at least making them pay their fair share of the rent)!

same. =/ i think the only marvel movie i’m excited about is Cap 3, and that promises to be a decently handled story (unlike most of the other marvel movies)

meh, I would be more excited if it weren't Civil War.  Or rather, if it weren't the Civil War in a Cap movie.  Since it's a cap movie, it's gonna be appealing to Steve fans which means that, automatically, if MCU Civil War plays out anything like the comics, it's going to be "Tony Stark is in the wrong!!1!" nerdboy fanraging and if I wanted to see that shit, I'd just read Marvel comics these days.

The only Marvel movie I'm really looking forward to is Captain Marvel, and of course it was moved back for a scrawny, whiter-than-marshmallow superhero who's gotten three reboots in the last, what, 10 years? yay.

Hi there! I got sucked into your blog through your lovely commentary on CATWS and the relation in which it exists to Greek drama and the military-industrial complex, and ended up trawling through your Tony Stark tag. I was wondering when it was revealed that Tony Stark injected himself with Extremis during the course of Iron Man 3? Keep the great work up, I adore reading your posts and tags!

I'm glad you like my stuff!Re: extremis, It wasn't revealed, just heavily implied. Tony wouldn't have used the strain we saw, but a modified one - he had solved the explosive factor while drunk all those years ago, why would the film show that except to tie into the narrative? Tony solving while blind drunk and young and careless the thing that would aid in his future self's healing from trauma in both body and mind. All those years ago he didn't care that much about it except to impress a girl. in the future he recognizes it for how important it is, another marker on his journey from tony stark, billionaire playboy heedless of the consequences of his genius, into tony stark, iron man - so aware of the consequences he becomes a self-made superhero to be able to personally control/mitigate the impact of his genius on the world. This hubristic self-appointed messianic asshole.I honestly didn't even consider any other alternative for why Tony could have the surgery at the end of a film all about the extremis virus, and *only* then. Narratively ... It's the only thing that makes sense. He has the surgery at the end because a) he *can*, he has the means now with this new tech that the whole film has been about, and b) he's also reached an internal point where he can, where he doesn't need metal in his heart/on his skin to be iron man. He doesn't need that fear/burden in his life, he knows what he is and what he can achieve even without those physical markers/manifestations of iron man and his transformation. It's integrated into his psyche now. The terror driving him, that feeling of only be safe/whole/worthy in the suit has abated. I can't find the link bec I'm on my phone, but if you find my post 'The Clean Slate Protocol' (it's in my meta master post, link on the sidebar) I talk more about how it makes narrative sense, and ties into Tony's arc in becoming more and more integrated with the concept of iron man and less obsessed with/reliant on the suit as his only indicator of worth and safety.On a more general level, this article (http://www.dailysuperhero.com/2013/05/iron-man-3-theory-could-tony-stark-have.html) basically gives a rundown of why it's the logical/likely justification re: Tony's surgery.
