My script project is now titled DragonSoul!
I hope I don’t have to change it again bc I absolutely love this title (thank you @caddy-crystal-queen!)
Plus I finally managed to define Stardust’s character arc: He starts off having lived most of his life in poverty, which is why he sells his soul; so he can get out of squalor and live a comfortable life. However, being rich goes to his head and while he does still have a philanthropic side and genuinely wants to help the careless dragons, he becomes rather hedonistic and reckless. Essentially, he has to learn to be more conscientious and not take his loved ones (and his life) for granted.
Also this song is essentially how Mephistopheles feels about Stardust:

So yeah on the whole this project is developing very nicely. I can’t wait to see what directions it’ll go in next :)

THE PITCH: About my film.
PREMISE
A teenager tries to discover who murdered her best friend.
LOG-LINE
An 18 year old student attempts to discover why her best friend was murdered and who murdered her.
GENRE
Horror/ Crime
LOCATION
Pennsylvania, USA
MY PITCH
___ is a horror/ crime film based around the lives of a group of students living in a small town in Pennsylvania. After a devastating murder happens, the small town is confronted with the fact that there is a kill amongst them. The police rule the death as a suicide, although the friends of the victim know that isn’t what happened. The film will focus around Emily’s attempt to discover the murderer of her best friend. Throughout the film, you will meet a variety of different characters each with different motives and reasons for committing the crime, but it is up to the audience to figure out who done it by the end of the film. Will the killer ever be revealed?
I would like the film to be exclusive to a certain platform, like Netflix, as recently this has been very popular within certain audiences. Recently, television shows on Netflix, like House of Cards and Orange is the New Black have been very successful, and I would like to continue this success with a film. Audiences who have enjoyed Netflix series’ are likely to try this too.
My target audience will be people from the ages of 16-25. This is the most common audience within the horror genre. I think that my film would also appeal to fans on television horror shows as over the past few years, shows like American Horror Story and Hannibal have gained a popular following, as well as older shows like The Walking Dead, which fits into the horror genre. I would like to target this audience with my film idea, as horror is a genre that continues to increase in popularity within both film and television audiences, which means that the target audience is very broad and can appeal to more people. I believe that my film will appeal to both men and women as there is something for everyone, like the horror aspect, crime/detective aspect, as well as a varied cast that everyone will enjoy.
I think that the budget for this film would be a big budget. I would like to use actors who are very popular and relevant within the current teenage and young adult market, as fans of these actors/actresses will want to see the film regardless of the content, therefore increasing my target audience. Hiring these actors will be expensive; therefore the film would require a big budget. There will not need to be a big budget for SFX, although there will be a lot of stunts and action throughout the film, which will require a large budget. There will also be a lot of damage to the town during the film which means that there will need to be lots of scenery and sets created to do this.
SCREENWRITING SCHEDULE
(Tony’s handout)
Premise.
A premise is a short sentence that explains the concept behind the film.
Example: A girl discovers she has telekinetic powers.
Log Line
A log line is a short description of the story idea that includes the main character(s), establishes the world of the film or tv show, and describes what is at stake. The log line should be less than 26 words (according to Steven Spielberg).
Example: Carrie, a teenage girl from a strict Christian family, takes revenge on her mother and bullies at school by using her newly discovered telekinetic powers.
Responsibilities of Script Writers
As a scriptwriter, there are many aspects you need toconsider regarding your target audience and social groups. Depending on whereyou intend to showcase your work, whether it is on television or on an exhibition platform like Netflix, you need to adapt your script to suit the audiences of your chosen platform.
When choosing a target audience for your script, you need to consider the platform that your show/film will be shown on. For example, if you wanted to display very controversial topics, nudity, horror, or violence, there are certain platforms where you will be able to reach your target audience better. It would be unlikely that a script with any of the above topics would be shown on television channels like BBC or ITV as there is a very wide audience for these channels including children, so the shows will not be able to be aired before watershed. Whereas on exhibition platforms like Netflix or Amazon Prime, you would have more freedom with what you’re allowed to show as the audience for these platforms are over 18, as you have to be 18 to sign up. It is also difficult to be sensitive to certain topics, or cover any controversial topics, or use satire that could be seen as offensive, when you are broadcasting to a very diverse audience.
Scriptwriters should also be careful when exercising their right to freedom of speech. You have to consider different age groups, ethnicities, genders, sexualities, and religions, as your freedom of speech could be considered offensive to certain groups. This is not good for a scriptwriter as it means that their script will appeal to a smaller target audience and it could affect reviews negatively. For example, if a script were considered racist or homophobic, even satirically, it would hugely impact the reviews and the audience’s opinion of the script. Regardless of how much a scriptwriter wants to use their freedom of speech, they have to consider how much this will affect the audience of their show/film, and the sales and how much money can be made. It wouldn’t make sense for a writer to purposely offend as many people as possible as it would negatively affect the writer and no good will come of it.
As a writer, you should be careful of what is in your script. Something that the writer views as okay could be the complete opposite for a certain audience, and could be unintentionally offensive. An example of how a film has been deemed offensive by an audience is ‘50 Shades of Grey’. Since the film release, it has received many negative reviews due to the audience seeing it as abusive and glorifying abuse, which is insensitive to victims of sexual assault and abuse. The film has been banned in certain countries due to the content, including India and Malaysia. Certain groups have also tried to boycott the film on social networks like twitter, using a hashtag “#50dollarsnot50shades”. Supporters of the boycott campaign, The National Center on Sexual Exploitation, have expressed their opinion of how outraged they are that Hollywood are trying to make money by glorifying abuse. (1) The campaign encourages people to redirect their money from supporting the movie to donating in to a charity and organizations that helps victims of domestic abuse. Campaigners also protested the film premier in the UK. Due to the controversy the film has received, the film has been getting mixed reviews, which isn’t a good thing when trying to achieve the highest amount of sales.
When using satire in a script and comedy, you have to consider what is humorous and what is just offensive to an audience. A recent example of this is “The Interview”, starring James Franco and Seth Rogen. The script, written by Seth Rogen, focuses around two journalists who are set the task to kill Kim Jong-un. Although this was originally wrote as a joke and not to be taken literally, it caused huge controversy around the world, and became part of a huge dispute between the USA and North Korea and even bought up subjects like war between the two. The film was perceived more as threats by North Korea than seen in a humorous way. Sony Pictures, who produced the film, were hacked during the lead up to the film. After FBI investigations, it was revealed that there were traces back to North Korea within the hacking incident. (2) It is unclear if Sony will be able to make back the money that was invested into the film, which isn’t good for everyone involved in the film. This is a reason why you must be very careful with using satire and portraying controversial topics as it can cause huge problems, and in the case of ‘The Interview’, it could have caused war.
Scriptwriters have lots of responsibilities that they must uphold as breaking these rules could result in a loss of money or causing huge controversy.
