For my final major project, I wanted to combine both film and illustration. I will be producing a short graphic novel adapted from a successful movie. I have chosen to create this graphic novel as I feel that most people believe graphic novels means that it is about superheroes and only one genre, and I would like to introduce a new audience to the market. I have chosen to adapt The Craft for my graphic novel, as it is a very popular film since its original release, and recently, the witch theme and genre of films/TV has become more popular thanks to recent shows like American Horror Story, The Originals, Sleepy Hollow, and Salem, as well as many more.
I will create this graphic novel by adapting the script to a short comic-style story, and focusing only on the important scenes. The movie will be adapted to about 40 pages worth of illustrations and text, and each page will be equivalent to a minute in the film. This means that the script for the film will have to be roughly halved in length.
The unique selling point of my product is the genre of the graphic novel and the audience it appeals to. There haven’t been any graphic novels about witches or in the horror/ thriller genre recently that appeals to a young adult and teenage audience so I believe that this would be a popular product.
The target audience I plan on reaching with this product would be teenagers and young adults, aged 16-25. My product will be aimed at both boys and girls, as although the graphic novel audience is typically male, I am hoping to expand the audience with this product, especially as the movie is target more towards girls. As I would like my book to be in the horror/thriller genre, it would be aimed at teenagers rather than younger children. I found while researching that there aren’t really any graphic novels about witches that are for older people, and most only appeal to younger children. This means that my product would be unique and would attract new readers to graphic novels. The age rating for the movie is a 15, so as the film appeals to a teenage audience, the graphic novel will most likely appeal to the same.
For inspiration for this project, I have researched a variety of different graphic novels that already exist in order to see what sort of style is popular within the target audience for graphic novels. I have researched artists and illustrators who work mainly on graphic novels to help me to find an individual artistic style that I could use in my novel. I hope to draw a lot of inspiration for my illustrations for the novel from Jill Thompson and Nicolas Rix. I really like their artistic styles, and I hope to be able to use the same sort of style as Jill Thompson as she hand draws and colors her illustrations rather than doing it digitally.
I got the inspiration for the complete concept of this idea from making my EPK on a previous project. I focused on rebranding a cult film, and by doing so, I found out that there was a huge target audiences for cult films. This is why I chose to use The Craft as my graphic novel idea, as this film has a dedicated audience and is still relevant in current pop culture.
My project will be in a printed book format. I plan on printing A5 hardback books in mainly black and white, with some use of colour. I wanted to keep the book in black and white as I feel like it follows the comic book/ graphic novel traditional theme, although I still want to use some color to highlight key points within the story and make it more appealing and fun to the audience.
To make my product, I will be hand illustrating the book and creating all the imagery in pencil on paper, and then scanning it into Photoshop and editing it so it will look the best it can. I plan on colouring it by hand also, and I would like to try using watercolours. The items I will need to produce this product are quite simple, and all I will need is an A5 sketchpad/paper, pencil, watercolour, a scanner, and photoshop.
HOW REALISTIC IS YOUR IDEA?
The finances needed to produce this product are quite low as I will only be printing 10 copies of the book, and mostly in black and white, which means that the printing costs will only reach the £60 to £70 mark. If I needed to, I could also reduce this cost by printing paperback books instead of hardback, and printing completely in black and white. This will reduce the cost by quite a lot, and will only cost around £40 to £50. The materials needed to produce the book will only cost about £10 so all in all, the prices for everything combined are quite realistic and affordable.
I believe that I will have enough time to produce my graphic novel as long as I aim to produce around 2 pages a day for everyday of the week. Creating a page will be quite time consuming so I am a bit concerned about getting everything created on time, but If I face the problem of not getting time to finish it to the standard I would like, I can always change the illustrations to only black and white, so I will save a lot of time by not needing to colour the illustrations.
I really like my idea and I think I will really enjoy making it. I am a big fan of the film I am adapting into the novel, and I also enjoy illustrating. I think that the combination of two things I like in my project will keep me motivated and inspired to work hard and create a good product.
The final format for my product will be a portrait A5 hardback book. It will be 36 pages in black and white with some use of colour on certain pages. The pages will be white, matte and 170 g/m2. The text throughout the book will be handwritten as all the pages will be completely hand illustrated, except from on the front cover and back cover.
