As the process of the Griffin gets underway, Alice and I are joined by writer/editor, Mady Jones who has spent the last two weeks with us reviewing various versions of the Griffin scripts and getting up to speed. One of the first things we discussed was how important it is, as you are editing and re-writing your script, that you add the day’s date to each version so you are assured you are working on the most current one. The writing software you use is important as well. I would recommend Final Draft 9, which we use. FD offers several different templates, choose, Stageplay. Your work will be saved in the .fdx format and ready for professional use. I will also start adding piano renditions of the music and singing all the different parts of the characters. I’m not a great singer, and it’s not important how you sound at this beginning stage - thank goodness.

I've finished my senior short play first draft, I suspect the final draft will look VERY different since I already know all that I'm going to change, but this is what I'm turning in tomorrow so here, have a look!
*Starts with a dream. Music begins trance/dream-like and cheery, but turns into creepy, nightmarish music. Lights are down but the curtain is open. We can see someone on a bed-like shape twisting and turning after the music starts to turn creepy. Another figure sips their drink and reads the paper from what appears to be a kitchen table. They do not react to the dream, unaware that it is happening. Finally, the music stops, and we can see the figure sit up from the bed. Someone walks on the floor into view, lights low/spotlight? on them.*
VOICE: *Taunting, creepy* Rose...Roselin...
*The figure in the background slips out of their bed and onto the stage floor. We can see their face now, and they look confused, upset, and scared. They walk onto the floor and look around, scared of what they might find. They see the VOICE, and they look away, hardened, but still scared.*
HERO: *Determined, scared, refusing to face VOICE* That’s not my name.
VOICE: Rosie... Of course it is... *Puts arm on them, walks behind them and allows it
to slip off, as if they’re friends.* You know that, don’t you, Rosie?
HERO: No, I’m not! *Scared* That’s not me, I’m not- My name is Hero, not, not-
VOICE: You know that you are. You always will be. You can’t change that, Rose. The
sooner you accept that, the better. *Smiling, walking away towards exit.* You don’t want people to think you’re a freak, do you? *Laughing, exit.*
HERO: I’m not... I’m not a freak, I’m not. I-
*Sitting figure on stage stands and goes to the door of HERO’S BEDROOM, peers inside, and speaks softly at first, and then louder, trying to wake HERO up for school.*
MOM: Rose... Rose, dear...
HERO: *Looking around for the source of the voice, thinking it is the VOICE, and
inches backwards towards stage, slipping onto it* No, go away. Leave me alone already!
MOM: *Louder* Rose, get up! You’re going to be late for school!
HERO: *Slips into bed again, MOM does not see this, rolls away from MOM and puts
pillow on top of head, muttering.* No, no...
MOM: *Yelling, LIGHTS UP ON STAGE* Rose, get up you silly girl!
HERO: *Yelling and sitting up suddenly, wide awake but obviously still thinking
they’re still in the dream* That is not my name! *Huffing loudly, looks around, sees MOM, panicks.*
MOM: *Smirking a little at HERO’S obvious panic, thinking they’re just startled into
awakeness.* I don’t care what your name is, so long as you get up and get going! *Satisfied with daughter’s awakeness, leaves room and goes back to kitchen table to continue sipping tea.*
HERO: *Sighs in relief after MOM leaves, talking to themself.* That was a close one.
*Goes behind screen/offstage and changes into obviously male clothing, exits room.*
VOICE: *Walks on from stage left and follows HERO.* It’s not enough, you know. You
still look like a girl. *HERO ignores the VOICE, as usual.*
MOM: *Sees HERO, does a subtle double-take while HERO goes about getting
breakfast/getting ready.* You dress so much like a boy, sometimes I wonder if I had a son instead of a daughter! I don’t even remember where you got those clothes from...
VOICE: Oh, the irony! *Dramatically places hand on chest, posing.*
HERO: *Facing audience, we can see the sick, stiff look on their face.* Okay mom,
I’m going now.
MOM: But you didn’t eat your breakfast!
HERO: *Leaving out the door with VOICE trailing behind, but facing the audience.*
I’m not hungry anymore. *Slams door with a little too much effort, accidental due to being so spooked.*
*LIGHTS DIM on stage so we can still see MOM’S figure, but she soon leaves to go to work. LIGHTS COME UP on the floor before HERO and VOICE crosses from STAGE RIGHT to the middle of the floor with ALLY.*
HERO: Thanks for helping me with my chest binder.
ALLY: *Nodding.* You really need to get a new one, you’ve had that one forever. It
doesn’t really work well anymore, now that you’ve finished puberty and stuff. *Light laughter.*
VOICE: She’s talking about your chest.
HERO: *Tugs on jacket to cover up torso, obviously uncomfortable.* Haha, yeah.
Well, it’s not like I can just ask my mom for a new one.
ALLY: I don’t get why you have to hide the fact that you have a chest binder at all.
*HERO sighs loudly, clearly they’ve had this conversation before, ALLY cuts them off before they can start it again.* I know that you think your mom would flip out that hey, guess what, you’re not a girl after all, but she’s your mom! You and your mom are really close, she loves you! I’m sure that she’ll accept you no matter what.
VOICE: *Sarcastically* Yeah, I’m sure you just tell her! Everything will be rainbows
and butterflies!
HERO: It’s different for you, Ally! Your parents are super hippies and no one cares
that you like girls! But for me, it’s not like that, it’s part of my identity! *Getting louder and angrier.* Not being straight is just one aspect to a person, but in this stupid society we’ve created, gender is part of someone’s identity! Everyone knows that some people are gay! That’s how life is! But basically no one, at least no one here, has the brains to realize that surprise, you’re all wrong, go home and don’t try again, gender and sex aren’t the same thing! *Breathing hard with the force of their anger and the truth to their words. They stop afterwards and come back to themselves, to real life, and blink to hold back tears. They’re obviously upset, but they get a hold of their emotions and embarrassingly look away from ALLY.*
VOICE: *Sarcastic, slow clapping after a moment.*
ALLY: *Shocked from angry explosion, lets HERO take a moment after.* I’m so
sorry, Hero. I know, you’re right. I got really lucky with my friends and family, and you didn’t, and I’m sorry. You have me though, okay? *Slowly puts arm on HERO’S SHOULDERS. HERO lets her.* Something else is bother you though, isn’t it? You don’t usually get so riled up for no reason. What is it, hun?
VOICE: *Close to HERO’S SIDE, excited.* Yeah, why don’t you just tell her. I’m sure
she’ll understand.
HERO: *Silent for a moment, because ALLY is right and they both know it.* ...It’s my
mom. It’s just something she said this morning. She wanted a daughter, and I’m... not one. And she doesn’t even know that.
VOICE: Your poor, poor mother.
*School bell rings, ALLY and HERO look up and at each other, separating.*
ALLY: I know you’re not going to listen to me, but I think you should tell your
mom. I really think she won’t have a problem with it. *Cuts HERO off.* I
know, I know, I don’t know your mom like you do, but at least think about it. I’ll talk to you later, okay? *Runs off to class in the other direction while HERO walks into stage left door while shaking their head.*
*Time passing shown with lights and music. HERO hurries out of stage left door onto floor again, obviously upset. ALLY enters stage right and looks around for HERO, sees them, and hurries over.*
VOICE: *Loud muttering, following closely behind HERO.* Useless, pathetic, as if you
could justify that, what’s wrong with you, why would you do that, such a terrible idea...
ALLY: Is everything okay? I heard that Mr. Cathal called you out in the middle of
class, and, well, that stuff went down.
HERO: He’s going to call my mother.
ALLY: What?
HERO: He said that my “request” to be called Hero instead of my given name is
something popular that young girls do a lot when they’re “searching for their identity” and “figuring out who they are.” He didn’t seem to get that I know who I am, it’s him who doesn’t know. He just kept using she, she, she, and I am not a girl! *Standing from bench in upset anger.* I may look like one but I’m certainly not one and he, he wouldn’t stop and I wasn’t going to just sit there and take it anymore, I can’t do that to myself anymore, it’s not right! It’s not right... Is it?
ALLY: Of course it isn’t. You did the right thing. You just need to figure out how
you’re going to stop your mom from getting that phone call.
HERO: Yeah...
*HERO and ALLY get quiet and the lights dim, they say their goodbyes as it is after school and HERO exits stage right door. Lights come up on stage as HERO walks through the front door. VOICE sits on apron, nonchalantly. They are the only one home right now, they drop off their stuff and sit in the chair closest to the phone. MOM enters.*
MOM: Hi honey, how was your day?
HERO: Fine.
MOM: *Notices HERO’S obvious attention on the phone but doing stuff in the
kitchen.* Waiting for someone to call?
VOICE: You could say that. Such a genius mom is.
HERO: Uh, no, what would make you think that?
MOM: Oh, nothing... Is it a boy?
VOICE: *Snorts.* Yeah, right!
HERO: Mom!
MOM: What? I was just asking... You don’t usually show such an interest in boys.
HERO: *Under their breath.* There’s a reason for that.
MOM: What? Anyways, I need to make a call-
HERO: *Moving in front of phone with a nervous smile.* Can’t it wait? Please?
MOM: ...Of course, honey. But if I get a phone call I’ll have to tell them I couldn’t
reach them because my daughter was flirting for the first time in her life. *Exits.*
VOICE: *Mocking MOM.*
*Phone rings. HERO and VOICE whip around to look at it with wide eyes, and stare for a second before HERO picks it up.*
HERO: *Pitches voice up slightly.* Hello? ...Oh, yes, hello Mr. Cathal, what can I do for
you? ...Roselin? *Hardened tone, more like their normal voice.* I’m afraid I don’t have a daughter by the name of Roselin. I do, however, have a child by the name of Hero... Yes, yes I understand. But just because their legal name is Roselin, that does not mean- ...No it doesn’t. Yes... I- I... I would love to speak to the principal if this is going to be a continuing issue with you not being able to accept my child as who they are... No, and good day to you, Mr. Cathal. Don’t call again. *Hangs up phone angrily. Breathes out harshly, turns to audience, horrified.* What have I done... No, no, this is not what I wanted... Oh god... *Sits in chair harshly.*
*Lights dim as dream sequence music plays again.*
VOICE: Oh Roselin, what have you done now? Your mother will be so devastated
when she finds all of this out.
HERO: *Snaps, upset.* I’m not Roselin, you dimwitted existence of wasted space!
And I know what I did, I had no choice!
VOICE: No choice, really? Of course you have a choice. You could just keep quiet, wait
until you move out to grow out of your shell, never crush your poor mother’s dear heart...
HERO: I... I could... But I don’t want to live this way anymore. I don’t want to lie
about who I am.
VOICE: *Freezing, regarding them carefully.* ...I see. Well, I guess you really don’t
have a choice then.
HERO: *Nodding.* I have to tell mom.
VOICE: Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
HERO: *HERO sticks out hand to VOICE, VOICE takes it, confused. HERO shakes their
hand.* Thanks for existing, I guess. You may have made my life worse, but I’ll be a better person with you.
*Lights come up, HERO returns to their bed, the voice going through the stage left door. HERO wakes up and goes into kitchen. MOM is there, reading the paper. The paper clearly reads a headline about transgender individuals in the media. HERO freezes when they see the paper, but keeps going.*
HERO: Good morning, mom.
MOM: Good morning, honey. Do you have any plans for today?
HERO: Not really. *Sits down with coffee mug, staring it down. VOICE has entered
and stands in the back, silent and watching.* Uh, mom?
MOM: Yes, sweetie? *Paying attention but not looking entirely away from her
newspaper.*
HERO: Mom, I... I wanted to tell you something.
MOM: *Sensing its importance, puts down paper and looks concerned.* What is it?
*HERO is silent.* You can tell me anything, okay, Rosie? *Rosie was clearly the wrong thing to say, and HERO glances at MOM quickly.* Is this about that boy? Are you pregnant?
HERO: *Horrified.* No! Mom, what the heck?! Of course not! There is no boy!
MOM: Oh, okay, if you say so. Now what is it you wanted to tell me then?
HERO: *Torn. Makes a decision.* I... Nevermind. It’s not important.
MOM: Oh, all right, if you insist. *Silence between MOM as she picks up and
continues reading paper and HERO as they contemplate what they’ve just done. MOM seems to remember something.* Actually, I had something that I wanted to tell you.
HERO: *Sounds like they might cry.* What is it?
MOM: I got a letter this morning... From your school. *HERO looks at MOM,
terrified.* It’s from the principal. I could be wrong, but I didn’t think there were any award ceremonies coming up and your grades for the semester shouldn’t be in yet. I thought I should let you explain before I opened it.
HERO: *Horrified. This is the worst case scenario. They don’t know how to proceed.*
I- I... *Breathing hard, looking around for an escape, there’s no way out. VOICE gives thumbs up, and although HERO doesn’t seem to see it, they still come to a decision.* Mom, I do have something to tell you. I... I’m not- *Grits teeth, closes eyes, forces it out.* I’m not your daughter.
MOM: Of course you are, honey, what’s this about?
HERO: Mom, no. No, I’m not your daughter, because I’m not a girl. *MOM is silent.*
I... I don’t feel okay in this body. I was born a girl but I’m, I’m not one. I don’t want to be one. This isn’t just a one time thing, I really can’t handle being thought of as a girl and it’s been like that for a while. This is part of me, and I can’t- I can’t change it. I’m sorry. *Stands up, goes to door.* I’m so, so sorry. I’ll be out with Ally. *Exits. Lights dim as MOM sits down at the table in shock. Lights come back on after MOM has exited.*
HERO: *Enters quietly. Doesn’t see MOM. Tries to escape to room.*
MOM: *Calling from backstage.* Rose? Is that you?
HERO: *Closes eyes. VOICE is there on the apron again, watching with interest.* Yes.
MOM: *Enters. The two stand and stare at each other, unsure how to proceed for a
moment. Finally, MOM comes forward and sweeps HERO into her arms.* Oh Rose, I’m so sorry. I guess I should’ve known my baby wasn’t okay but I just thought you liked boy clothes, I didn’t- *HERO hugs MOM back tightly.* I, I’ll be better, I promise. I’m so sorry, I can’t stand the thought of losing you. *Grips HERO by the shoulders and pulls them back, looking into their eyes.* I’m not going to lie to you, I don’t know anything about... all of this. But I’m going to try, because you’re my daught- my child, and I love you very, very much.
HERO: *Chokes on emotion, pulls MOM in for another hug.* Thanks, mom. I love you too. *MOM and HERO hug for another moment, before pulling back.* Today has been really tiring and I just want to go to sleep, so I’m going to, okay? But thank you. Really.
MOM: Of course, honey. Any time, okay? You can talk to me about anything.
HERO: *Exits towards room, remembers something, turns back.* Mom, I really love
the name that you chose for me, but it doesn’t fit me like you thought it did. I really... I really want to be called ‘Hero,’ is that okay?
MOM: *Confused with name choice, but nodding.* Of course. *HERO turns away again, but MOM stops her.* Uh, honey? Why Hero?
HERO: *Smiles softly.* Ally gave me really good advice when I first met her... She said that I should start being my own hero, because no one else was ever going to be able to be all that I strived to except for myself. *Shrugs.* I’ve come out, I’ve dealt with the things that I need to, and even though I still have a long ways to go before I’m where I want to be, I guess I’m... my own hero. *Smiles, exits.*
