I just want to tell you guys about my job for a second. I'm a legal transcriptionist, so I'm 100 percent a background person. The court reporter manages the proceedings and captures the audio, and I type up the actual transcript afterwards.
I will never interact with anyone whose transcripts I work on. I am a name on a signature line and they'll never know who I am. But I want someone to know that I give a shit. I try really hard to put down everything you say, exactly as you said it.
I hear your stories, and good God, do I hear them. I will listen to a line 50 times if I have to to get it right, because that's your own actual words in your own actual voice and that's important. I don't care if you stutter or have nonstandard grammar. If you have a strong accent, I try even harder because I worry that other people in the legal system aren't listening to you.
I don't know. I hope you never see me. If I'm visible in my work at all, I'm obscuring your voice and I don't want to do that. But I do give a damn. Someone out here gives a damn, I promise.
