@scrollgirl: I've been looking for a new procedural show to binge. Would you recommend this show to someone who has a low tolerance of rah rah america?

I think of it has less of the rah-rah america thing going on, it still has elements of that because of the whole NCIS of it all.

But considering everything I think it’s less into playing that up.

I think it’s because of the diversity of cast and issues they’re dealing with. I really like how Kai Holman represents the local point of view, and they’re very dialed in with issues between the mainland and living in Hawai’i.

Also, it’s very into the themes of family that feels very genuine. Most of the time too Hawai’i doesn’t feel like an NCIS show.

Plus, I really love that both in show and rl the main character is a Filipino-American. Actually there’s 2 Filipino-Americans actors in the show, and in the inverse of everything in NCIS-verse so far, there’s only one white dude in the team.

(I think most of my big issues happen when there’s an NCIS mothership crossover because of how OOC Jane Tennant is. And the way they want to push a ship between Jane and one of the NCIS OG agents).

C: A pairing you wish you shipped, but just can't.

Anything with Clint Barton or Phil Coulson. I'm just not attracted to Jeremy Renner and I'm not familiar enough with the 616 version to get into that version. Same goes with Phil - not attracted to that actor.  Honestly, pretty much anything Agents of SHIELD-related.  That show was not good!  Believe me, I tried to enjoy it! And any kind of -cest ship, specifically Thor/Loki. 

J: Name a fandom you didn’t care/think about until you saw it all over tumblr.

Merlin!  That show has been off the air for like 15 years but there’s still QUITE an active fandom on Tumblr.  Same goes for Hannibal (NBC).  Both of these properties are ones I found on this site, and they quickly became part of my top 3 fandoms.

Q: A ship you’ve abandoned and why.

St*ny. And I have to spell it like that because yes, it's in my blacklist. They were the first pairing I ever wrote fic for in the MCU fandom, and I have a multi-chapter fic of them that has like 17K hits on ao3. I should love them!  But when I started examining my media preferences I noticed that I was focusing way too much on white characters and white ships, and I was super into Steve/T*ny when I first found the Marvel fandom.  I was just finding whatever was popular and easily accessible, and that was a tough realization for me as a Black woman in fandom.  So I made a conscious decision to stop reading that pairing and to seek out pairings with at least one person of color in them.  That’s where the Iron Husbands obsession began, and they are now my OTP and I literally cannot handle seeing Tony being intimate in fanworks with anyone else.  Most fanworks are valid as fuck and I don’t wanna shit on anyone’s preferences, but it’s important for me to center Blackness as I navigate fandom - St*ny is too easy, too plentiful, too popular for me to be satisfied with heavily focusing on it in a fandom with so many pairings and characters.  Part of the reason I’m not receptive to Tom Holland’s Spidey is because he was making Superfamily jokes about him and RDJ and Chris Evans during the press tour for Civil War, which meant that he was aware of St*ny as a ship at the very least and I was just disappointed that he wasn’t diving deeper and trying harder, either.  I remember that moment in time very clearly and I just resented the fuck out of him for it.  An obviously projection of my own disappointment in myself but I don’t know that boy personally so I really don’t care.

V: Do you have any 3-way ships? If so, what?

TonyPepperRhodey, now and forever.  Is there any fic out there about Tony’s return from space and Pepper and Rhodey taking care of him?  Please don’t say I need to write it noooooooooo

If he's specifically a LTJG, then he was in the Navy. The fandom wiki is wrong, then, in saying he was in the U.S. Army.

Yeah, if the wiki says Army, it’s gotta be wrong. He was canonically in the Navy; it’s actually a fairly big plot point for him (the entire Navy Cross thing).

Just curious, if Emma/Miss Taylor had been the endgame pairing, would you feel there was still this power imbalance due to their previous teacher/student, mother figure to motherless child relationship? Or is it that commemt specifically that pushes things over the edge to uncomfortable?

I would also feel uncomfortable with an Emma/Miss Taylor romance, too, yes, and for that reason. Knightley’s comment kind of crystallizes everything I don’t like about his dynamic with Emma and it does make it worse, but it’s not like a tipping-point on a scale. It’s just...wow, he really went out and said that.

Emma and Mr. Knightley will never be my favourite couple (though they’re certainly not my least-favourite,) and if adaptations wisely omit the thirteen-years-old comment at least it keeps everything from feeling more and more like a nightmare I can’t wake up from. There are power imbalances in most, if not all of Austen’s couple dynamics, and that’s partly inescapable due to the society she was writing about, and she mostly does her best to make these pairings as palatable as possible for who is in them and where they are and what they’ve got to work with, but it doesn’t place them beyond criticism from a modern vantage-point, to my mind.

Gotta say, not sure I buy your reasoning. Vulcan has plenty of black people besides Michael, even if she’s the only black *human*. By this logic, every white human reminds Spock of his mom and every black human reminds him of his sister. Maybe I’m reading too much into it, but the original post + first 2 replies seemed to imply black women could be interchangeable (and also Spock wouldn’t date Uhura). I don’t mean this as an attack, just as a friendly observation.

I wasn’t sure how to address those first couple of replies--there was definitely at least one that seemed totally dismissive of the idea that in any universe whatsoever Uhura is an incredibly competent, capable, attractive woman. Someone whose heights I could not hope to aspire to. I was thrilled to see Uhura and Spock together in the reboot; it was plausible, it seemed like such a balanced relationship. Uhura seems like she’s good at relationships, at giving the distance and the closeness that is right for whatever situation, something that kinda emotionally-clumsy Spock almost certainly needs. And she’s patient, which is great because I bet Spock spooks like a horse.

(We’ll ignore Star Trek: White Guys Can TOTALLY Be Khan, Everybody  ‘cause as far as I’m concerned none of that happened, none of it at all, CERTAINLY not her “I’m just gonna endanger the whole crew now out of pique” huffiness.)

The whole Uhura/Spock relationship being as generally abused as it has been in fandom is...predictable, I guess, but pathetic. Talk about fragility. It was so exciting to see a black woman respected, given the attention of the character who has for fifty years been widely regarded as the most fascinating. That a bunch of white people are seriously uncomfortable with it is, well.

Yeah.

I’m really pleased with the fact that Michael is very unlike Uhura, and I certainly don’t see them as interchangeable (though it’s a funny mental image, Michael trying for anything resembling diplomacy instead of blunt honesty). I apologize that I came off that way.
