Here's your penalty, so kill you maybe?
In probably the most bizarre story I've ever come across, even outside the sporting world, a former NHL draft pick in '04 was sentenced to 8 years in prison for murdering a ref! Ok we've all been extremely pissed at a ref at one point or another. Maybe we got tossed or shown a red card. Maybe we let them have it verbally or maybe gave them a shove, but nothing comes close to this.
Ladislav Scurko, drafted 170th overall by none other than the Broadstreet Bullies themselves the Philadelphia Flyers, decided he didn't want the calls going the other way permanently. Apparently the ref in question Marek Liptaj had moved into Scurko's home and claimed to have cancer. Soon after Scurko found out that Liptaj had been lying about having cancer and tried to boot him from his house. Argument ensued and a couple of stab wounds later we have our first case of player murdering ref.
Apparently the reason he only got an 8 year sentence is because he was found to be in a state of diminished sanity at the time. WTF is all I'm going to say.
