I don't think Kanto itself is the problem, but how the visuals are just like Pokémon Go but slightly better, which are pretty sterile IMO. The towns are even named after colors so it'd be great if they did something fun with that idea, but they just played it safe.
Yeah, sterile is a good word. It doesn’t seem to have any charm. Even in HGSS Kanto looked more interesting, but I guess we still haven’t seen enough to make that kind of accusation. The only thing that made me think “oh, that’s nice, I want to play it” in the whole trailer was having your Pokémon following you. Everything else was disappointing: from the visuals, to the gameplay, to the content, to the fact that I’ll be forced to play with a damn Pikachu/Eevee the whole game. Every piece of extra info I read about these games makes me want to play them even less, and this is coming from a huge Pokémon fan who has been playing since Red and Blue.
It’s obvious that they’re aiming at the new and casual players from Pokémon GO. Maybe that’s okay and I just have to accept that I’m not the target audience for this game, but I can’t help but think that this is just a quick cash grab to get more people to buy a Switch.
On the other hand, I feared that Game Freak would try to rush Generation VIII just to have mainline Pokémon games on the Switch this year, but having these games in the meantime gives me hope that they’ll try to do something special for the future of the franchise. They really have no excuse after how huge and revolutionary the last Zelda and Mario games ended up being. It would be very disappointing to see Nintendo’s other big franchise not evolve alongside them (althought I’d blame Game Freak for that, but that’s another topic).
