The best part of Skylar's job was getting to hang out with the little fuzzies and that pretty much went without saying. Animals were better than people. They didn't break your heart and they loved most unconditionally. That was more than Skylar could say about a lot of people. And as she stared back into the eyes of the kitten whom she had affectionately named 'Fried Rice the third', the wolf was suddenly struck with a brilliant idea.

Usually, when Skylar had an idea — there was no shaking her out of it. So when she left work to race over to Rosie's to see her little sister...well, the excited energy seemed to be rolling off her in waves. Skylar saw Maren through the wide windows at first, knocking on the glass to get her attention before waving and bouncing along the sidewalk to meet her working sister inside. She greeted Maren with a grin almost too big for her own face. "Mare! When do you get off?"

Perdita Otero found a sort of bliss in her artistry. Somehow, she even found a way to make the repetitive action of rolling out clay seem graceful and precise, or perhaps she was just trying to show off for her little sister. This was supposed to be a private lesson, after all, and (at least in Perdita's mind) she'd gone out of her way to choose something rather simple.

The muddy, earthy scent and cool, wet texture of the clay between her fingers; the distinctly sweet smell of fresh leaves left in a pile between them; and Juniper, of course... the woodsy fragrance, that of tea and coffee and the smoke that lingered on her clothes despite all her attempts to minimise every scent possible. What could be better than that?

She'd been quiet for most of the day, not especially comfortable with shift in Portum's climate and the gloomy mood it cast upon the town. Nor did she like that she could feel it in the air, cold wind and dense fog that seemed to spell trouble. She'd had enough trouble for a lifetime.

This was the best form of a distraction from it all — a quiet moment with one of the few people she could ever truly trust.

"Don't flatten it any more than you have to. It should be wide enough for one of the leaves, but no more. How are you finding it?"

despite whatever darkness had blanketed portum ( around the time ade arrived, something she was ignoring ), people were helpful. it was different than most towns for the obvious reason, making it easy for the hybrid to get comfortable. strings came attached to the help she was offered in the past. those who had no idea what they were dealing with trying — and sometimes succeeding — at getting adelaide to use her abilities to their gain. here, she didn't have to worry about that. so many were much more competent with their own powers. adelaide was no longer different; they all were. she knocks on the frame of the open door, smiling and waving when getting the gorgon's attention. a recommended person to seek, ade did and was glad the professor had time after classes to spend with her. someone so old looking so young, it was still a wonder. ❝ thank you for helping me out. i'm pretty excited for my crash course. ❞

Breaking in was the easy part. Holding a bucket of chicken on her hip at the same time proved to be a little more difficult. But if there was one thing Skylar knew about her sister, it was that Maren’s fridge would be empty. And if Skylar was going to be waiting around for her all day, she was going to need to eat. Skylar was like a bottomless pit. It was a good thing she kept active, though. Otherwise she might be the size of a house by the time she was forty.

“I knew it.” Skylar said to Maren’s open fridge, staring back at the empty shelves. After poking around the rest of her barely stocked kitchen, Skylar settled on leaving forty dollars and a sticky note on the center shelf of Maren's fridge:

For the most part, she respected her sister’s space enough to leave the rest of her trailer untouched. Half a bucket of chicken later however, and she was passed out on her sister’s bed.

hallowed grounds was still in tact and currently running twenty-four hours. it was a bit more people than the witch liked, but even she had never seen anything quite like this. if charvitha had ever felt fear, it was long forgotten. she lived to be feared. but even knowing fang was seconds away from being cloaked with bisma, it didn't stop that rare emotion from striking her in the heart when realizing her daughter was about to be in the thick of it, see charvitha in a way she never had. however she was stopped from having to do whatever terrible thing she had to when nila swooped in, and instead her daughter got to see her do something good, show her that even though their magic was made to take, it could still be used for good. vitha was in the backroom when the dragon walked in. the witch smiles and sits up, pushing out the other chair for nila to join her. ❝ hey, i'm glad you stopped by? did you see bisma? she's sitting in the corner with fang. ❞ she knew the little one would be upset if she didn't get to say hello. ❝ do you want something?, ❞ asked as she begins to get up.

In for four, hold for four, exhale for four, hold for four: those words had become indented into her brain, stuck on repeat like one of her records would skip. Juniper would notice, of course, that Perdita's breathing was abnormally measured — a practically robotic pace measured in exact seconds. And still, her heartbeat wasn't quite as lucky.

She needed to keep it together, visiting Juni at an hour like this. The last thing she wanted was to unsettle her sister in any way, and heaven forbid she worry Juni at all. Not here, not now, not ever.

What was once a sanctuary now felt like a prison, as though the town itself had betrayed her trust. In her embittered state, she couldn't help but wonder if it'd all been a trap, a house made of false promises intended to lure as many gullible supernatural creatures into a massacre as possible. Surely someone at the council knew, and surely they'd orchestrated the entire affair? The weapons and the sheer number of people... she'd seen it before, with innocent eyes. Mankind never seemed to hunt them on a whim. These people were cruel, and they were calculating, and such thoughts had disrupted Perdita's breathing pattern.

To ground herself, the fingertips of the gorgon's bandaged hand brushed against the hair of her sister. Her nostrils inhaled that sterile, chemical smell in the air, and her ears tried to acclimate to the humming and buzzing and beeping of a hospital room. It was late, but she couldn't leave.

Well, they'd try. But she wouldn't leave.

"How do you feel, hermana?" she asked, quiet in a way that unsettled even the speaker herself. Those words don't quite break the quiet between the sisters, they just enhance it somehow, and feel sort of... natural.

"It must be late. Is there a clock in here?"

the fair was pretty busy, portum falling into some sort of rhythm again, people out and about more and more often. pick pocketing was a lot harder with supernaturals, but the distractedness of those at the fair was making for a decent night. benny was way more noticeable than the banshee, but he had the advantage of his heightened senses to help him and finds kanda when he had a few things to show and tell. ❝ get anything good?, ❞ asked after turning over his own findings.

trying to keep busy, trying to let music and new job prep drown out whatever was wrong, adelaide hardly gave herself a second to think in the past couple of weeks. that meant maren was getting a fully decorated lyric book with her cd, some of it left in black and white so the werewolf could color too if she'd like. the hybrid was no artist but it was her best attempt. ade sits at the counter and orders fries and a chocolate milkshake, waving maren over. ❝ come bearing gifts, ❞ she's practically beaming handing over the mix she made.
