"I think this could be the one, El." Skylar whipped around to face her sister just as soon as the realtor was out of earshot. They were standing in the middle of what Sky considered a beautiful kitchen. The younger Finch was wearing a giddy smile. She was almost bouncing on her heals, she was so excited. "I mean, did you see the garden? And that little window seat? It's the perfect size for us." She figured she would have to do a little convincing. But really, the house spoke for itself.

"Well? What do you think?" Skylar leaned against the kitchen counter, arms crossed over her chest as she stared back at Eliana with an expectant look. Obviously, the only possible answer here was YES. She knew there was the issue of money — but for Skylar...it was sort of a non-issue. She was happy to foot the bill.

Skylar didn't do sleepovers. She didn't do the morning after and she most certainly didn't do... breakfast. She was usually the sneak out the back door before the sun comes up type. No one could really blame her for that. Especially after the disaster that was her last relationship. The idea of forming attachments seemed to make her skin crawl now. She couldn't do that again.

But there was something about Laon that made her want to break all the rules she'd inflicted upon herself. She wanted to stay in bed and kiss Laon's neck. She wanted to cuddle and be big spoon — while breathing in Laon's shampoo scent. The first time she had stayed over, the sleeping over part had been an accident. This time? Well, she'd already slept over once. What was the harm in doing it again?

"What smells so good?" Skylar wondered, having snuck up behind Laon as she cooked. The savory sweet smell of breakfast had drawn the wolf out of bed — and now she was nuzzling her nose into the back of Laon's neck. It wasn't any kind of breakfast Skylar was used to. But it certainly smelled good and anyone who knew Sky for more than five minutes knew that she was ruled by her stomach.

The best part of Skylar's job was getting to hang out with the little fuzzies and that pretty much went without saying. Animals were better than people. They didn't break your heart and they loved most unconditionally. That was more than Skylar could say about a lot of people. And as she stared back into the eyes of the kitten whom she had affectionately named 'Fried Rice the third', the wolf was suddenly struck with a brilliant idea.

Usually, when Skylar had an idea — there was no shaking her out of it. So when she left work to race over to Rosie's to see her little sister...well, the excited energy seemed to be rolling off her in waves. Skylar saw Maren through the wide windows at first, knocking on the glass to get her attention before waving and bouncing along the sidewalk to meet her working sister inside. She greeted Maren with a grin almost too big for her own face. "Mare! When do you get off?"

It was getting late. And the moon...well, it was getting full. Skylar had never been so irresponsible. You would think that after twenty-something odd years, she'd stop making this one monumental mistake. But she was becoming loose at the seams and that was clear as day. "Get a grip, Skylar." She muttered to herself through clenched teeth, her neck rolling as she resisted the shift. Just a couple more minutes. Just a few more strides and she could give into the snow moon.

Anything the moon wanted, she would have it. If the moon wanted blood and bones, she would have that too. But the moon had to wait for Skylar to get to safety first. Skylar had never meant to lose track of time. But she wasn't exactly on her A-game these days. Skylar, always a picture of perfect control had been anything but. If she could only get to the woods first. But her wolf was just itching to tear her apart. She was positively pale, her shirt drenched with sweat. It wouldn't be long now.

Breaking in was the easy part. Holding a bucket of chicken on her hip at the same time proved to be a little more difficult. But if there was one thing Skylar knew about her sister, it was that Maren’s fridge would be empty. And if Skylar was going to be waiting around for her all day, she was going to need to eat. Skylar was like a bottomless pit. It was a good thing she kept active, though. Otherwise she might be the size of a house by the time she was forty.

“I knew it.” Skylar said to Maren’s open fridge, staring back at the empty shelves. After poking around the rest of her barely stocked kitchen, Skylar settled on leaving forty dollars and a sticky note on the center shelf of Maren's fridge:

Buy yourself some groceries you broke bitch ♡

For the most part, she respected her sister’s space enough to leave the rest of her trailer untouched. Half a bucket of chicken later however, and she was passed out on her sister’s bed.

Skylar liked to consider herself a planner. A strategist, even. But the truth of it was - she'd changed. Skylar was a creature of impulse now. Both could be simultaneously true, she supposed. Skylar had been strategic about putting herself through vet school. She'd been calculated about escaping their father. She was a survivalist at heart.

Much of the same could be said about any of the Finch siblings. They were a smart bunch. But these last few years, Skylar was about as easy to pin down as the air itself. She was running. But Skylar didn't like to talk about the heavy.

She'd done a lot of traveling and often, she hardly knew where she would be sleeping next. But that kind of life could be so lonely. It wasn't sustainable in the long run. She missed her siblings. So when she heard the lot of them had settled in Portum, she and her dog weren't far behind.

"Ellie-belly! I know what you're thinking. What's my favorite sister doing at my hotel at such an hour? How did she find me? Why didn't she call first? How come she's got so many bags with her? All valid questions. Anyway, move out of the doorway. I'm coming in."

In name alone, The Old Haunt seemed like exactly the kind of place you might find a vampire. It was all a bit kitschy, wasn't it? Arriving in Portum, Skylar didn't have very high hopes for a small town so off the map. Admittedly, she'd become a bit of a city girl. But she had to give it to them. Portum did kitschy well.

When she stepped foot into the bar, it was more than what she was expecting. She came with the sole intention of scoping out her little brother's boyfriend. But maybe she'd stay for a drink after all. It was a little over the line, even for Skylar. She knew that. But she just wanted to set eyes on this Koda, that was all.

Missing the last few years of her sibling's lives had her feeling...disconnected from the lot. But that was something she would never admit. What harm was there in seeing what they had been up to anyway? Or who they'd been up to?

Skylar found herself a seat at the bar, one of the male patrons immediately taking a liking to her. He was persistent, she'd give him that. But she wasn't interested. Skylar could buy her own drink. Skylar's head soon whipped around to face the patron next to her, eyes glowing orange once her patience was up. "Fuck off." She bit back under her breath.

She watched with slight satisfaction as he immediately backed away and left her alone, her eyes returning to their light brown color. With a sigh, she turned her attention to the bartender. "Let me do a gin and tonic. Please."

After leaving her bag unattended at the bar, Skylar noticed something missing when she returned. Something very important. Something that was going to make or break her evening. Something she had been looking forward to all day. "Listen well and listen good. Because I'm only gonna ask you this once. And maybe a few times after that if I feel like it. Did you or did you not eat the chicken wing I left in my purse? I'm not mad, I just want to know." The wolf leaned in close and resisted the urge to sniff their breath. But she would if it came down to it.
