the trial room felt suffocating.
it wasn’t just from the heat of the overhead lights or how everyone’s voices were overlapping—it was the screens. the victim’s body flashed across them, your name repeated with the word suspect, evidence showing one after the other like it had already made up its mind.
kazuichi hadn’t stopped moving since it started.
his fingers drummed anxiously against the podium, sneakers tapping the floor with each passing second. he kept tugging his beanie back and forth, only for loose strands to pop out. every new piece of evidence felt like another nail being hammered down.
hajime’s voice cut in, firm but hesitant. “she was gone all day, no one saw her anywhere. and the murder happened during that exact window of time.”
kazuichi’s stomach dropped.
“so what!?” he snapped, voice cracking louder than he meant it to. “that doesn’t mean anything! people disappear all the time! i disappear all the time!”
“that emotional outburst is not helping your case, soda.” byakuya added while adjusting his glasses, unimpressed.
the mechanic rounded on him instantly. “shut up!”
but then—he looked at you.
you weren’t arguing, nor panicking. you just stood there, fingers curled tightly into your sleeves, eyes fixed somewhere below everyone else’s.
and you especially weren’t defending yourself.
“hey,” your boyfriend said softly, leaning toward you across the podium. “tell them what you were doing. you’ve got an explanation, right? just say it.”
you hesitated...then shook your head.
the air shifted along with the moment kazuichi felt something cold settle under his ribs.
“w-why not?” his voice dipped, uncertainty bleeding through. “if you didn’t do it, then just explain it! i don’t care if it’s embarrassing or whatever!”
as if to make things worse, nagito was the next to speak up.
“if she had something to hide, that would explain the silence, wouldn’t it?”
hiyoko crossed her arms with a sharp click of her tongue. “she’s acting super suspicious. if she’s innocent, why won’t she just say it already?”
peko’s tone remained calm, but her words were precise. “the lack of an alibi is the most damaging factor.”
each statement stacked neatly on top of the other.
and kazuichi could feel himself spiraling.
he hated this—hated trials. hated how quickly things turned deadly. hated how the room always felt like it was closing in. his heart was pounding so hard he might actually pass out.
“you’re wrong,” he insisted, even as doubt started to creep in. “she wouldn’t kill anyone! she’s not—she’s not like that!”
“then why won’t she talk?” mahiru frowned, frustrated but not cruel. “if she didn’t do it, she should just say where she was.”
that hit harder than any piece of evidence.
kazuichi turned back to you, eyes wide.
“...why won’t you?”
you finally decided to move. slowly, you reached into your bag. the room went silent as you pulled out something wrapped in crinkled paper—taped unevenly, corners bent like you’d redone it more than once.
the pink haired male blinked. “what’s that?”
you didn’t answer, simply started to unwrap it carefully.
inside sat a small metal keychain—two tiny wrenches crossed together, imperfect but polished. the edges were mostly smooth; one side dipped slightly where the metal had been bent by hand instead of machine. near the base, scratched slightly, were two letters;
K.S ♡
taking a deep breath, you began to explain.
“i didn’t disappear for no reason,” your voice was barely steady. “i was in the workshop.”
a ripple went through the class.
ibuki was the first to react—gasping dramatically with her hands covering her mouth. “wait, that’s handmade!?”
“...that metal’s been filed by hand.” chiaki observed gently, blinking down at it.
“i wanted to finish this before you saw it,” you continued, admitting the truth even as your cheeks burned. “if i told you where i was, you would’ve gotten curious. and you would’ve gone looking. and then it wouldn’t have been a surprise.”
silence.
kazuichi stared at the keychain like it just short-circuited his brain.
“you were...in the workshop?” he repeated faintly.
you nodded. “i’ve never worked with metal before. it took longer than i thought.”
the accusations that had filled the room minutes ago suddenly felt ridiculous.
kazuichi reached out cautiously, and picked up your gift which was warm from your hands, causing his fingers to tremble.
“you made this?” his voice came out quieter than usual, not loud or defensive. just small.
it was still embarrassing but you nodded again, avoiding his gaze.
for a second, he didn’t speak until—
“you’re such an idiot!”
the words burst out of him, but they weren’t angry. “you almost got yourself killed because you wanted to make me something stupidly cute!?”
he clutched the keychain to his chest like someone might snatch it away.
“do you have any idea how freaked out i was??” his voice shook despite him trying to keep it sharp. “you wouldn’t defend yourself! you just stood there!”
his shoulders trembled—not from anger, but from the adrenaline finally crashing. “i thought—” he swallowed hard. “i thought maybe you didn’t care if they voted for you.”
the confession slipped out before he could stop it.
everyone else was quiet, awkwardly aware this wasn’t just about the case anymore.
“i didn’t want to ruin the surprise.” you replied softly.
kazuichi stared at the scratched initials again. they weren’t perfectly aligned; one of the wrenches had a tiny dent near the handle.
but you made it, specifically thinking for him.
his face flushed violently.
“...it’s awesome.” he muttered, almost shy. “it’s seriously awesome, okay?” he put the keychain inside his pocket immediately, still a bit shaky.
“but next time,” he added, trying to regain his composure. “just tell me when you’re doing something like that! i don’t care about surprises if it means you almost getting voted out!”
he glanced back at you with a softer, genuine expression. now that he was entirely relieved, when he reached for your hand, kazuichi didn’t even try to pretend it was accidental.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
the suspicion doesn’t explode in the courtroom—it tightens slowly, like a vice.
hajime is the one who says it first, though carefully.
“the timeline still doesn’t account for where you were,” he says, glancing at you instead of accusing you outright. “you were gone from morning until evening, perhaps even later. no one saw you.”
mahiru crosses her arms. “and the murder happened around that time.”
across the room, nagito hums thoughtfully. “isn’t it interesting how the person we least expect can become the most compelling suspect?”
fuyuhiko doesn’t react immediately.
his arms are folded and his eyes are downcast, hardened look glaring at the floor. to anyone else, he might look indifferent. but you know better.
his jaw has locked upon the damned fact that you haven’t defended yourself once.
not when sonia asked for clarification.
not when chiaki gently suggested that your silence wouldn’t help your case.
not even when byakuya flatly stated, “remaining silent only strengthens the argument against you.”
you only stood there.
and that’s what bothers him.
fuyuhiko has seen you argue before. knows you don’t crumble under pressure, because you don’t back down when you’re right. if you were innocent—you’d be fighting.
so why aren’t you?
“oi,” he says at last, voice cutting through the debate without being raised. it’s directed at you, not the room. “you gonna say something?” yet you still don’t look at him.
the silence stretches long enough that even the others notice.
peko’s gaze shifts between the two of you, subtle concern flickering across her face even as her expression remains stoic. “young master,” she starts quietly. “if she cannot provide an alibi, we must consider the possibility—”
“don’t.” his voice sharpens instantly without being loud. no, his tone clearly meant final.
“you’re all building a fucking case around nothin’.” he says, eyes sweeping the room. “there’s no weapon tied to her. no fingerprints. no motive.”
“the absence of evidence is not innocence.” byakuya replies.
though his composure is cracking now—not into hysteria, but into controlled anger, simmering just beneath the surface.
hajime exhales. “then why won’t she explain where she was?”
that question hangs heavier than the accusations.
fuyuhiko turns back to you, clear frustration written on his face. but underneath it?
fear.
“you think i’m stupid?” he asks, low enough that only those nearby can hear. “if you didn’t do it, then why are you standin’ there like you’re ready to take the fall?”
despite your fingers tightening at your sides, you still don’t answer.
it’s in that moment when something shifts in him. not suspicion, never that—but the sick, crawling memory of loss. of standing in a trial room and realizing too late that someone important was slipping away.
his voice roughens as he continues to try. “i’m not asking as the ‘Ultimate Yakuza.’ i’m asking as your boyfriend. where the hell were you?”
the others watch intently now—not the suspect. the relationship.
you finally inhale slowly.
“...i didn’t want to ruin it.”
he blinks in confusion but lets you continue.
“ruin what?”
you reach into your bag and set something heavier in your palm before holding it out to him.
it’s leather.
dark, smooth, carefully stitched along the edges by hand. not flashy or decorative, but fitted. shaped precisely.
fuyuhiko’s brows knit together as he takes it from you.
“what the hell is this?”
“it’s a sheath,” you admit, suddenly hyper-aware of everyone watching. “for your knife. the one you keep in your cottage.” you continue before anyone can misinterpret it. “the strap on the old one was fraying, i noticed it once when i was over.”
it makes him freeze.
he hadn’t told anyone about that.
“...i didn’t want it falling out,” you add, face feeling like it was running in flames. “so i measured it while—well, you don’t need to know that part—and tried to make one that’d actually hold.”
there aren’t any carvings or marks on it. just reinforced stitching along the belt loop with a stronger clasp. lined interior so the blade won’t dull as quick. the gift itself was thought through in functionality, clearly made to last.
the courtroom is silent in a very different way now. even byakuya doesn’t interrupt.
fuyuhiko doesn’t pay attention to that. he’s too busy turning the sheath over, thumb pressing against the seam as to test it. his expression doesn’t change at first, but the tension in his shoulders shifts.
“you disappeared all day,” hajime breaks the silence. “to make that?”
you let out a short hum. “i needed some tools to punch the holes properly. didn’t want to mess it up.”
fuyuhiko gives you a look—one like he’s trying to process the fact that while everyone else was building a case against you...you were building something meant to keep him safer.
his jaw tightens again, but not in anger. “...tch. you’re unbelievable,” he mutters. a faint scoff escapes him after he tucks the item to his side, grip tight and secure around it. “you could’ve just told me.”
“and ruin the surprise?”
the blonde doesn’t respond verbally, but his gaze feels like something close to exasperated fondness.
the trial room noise slowly begins to pick back up, hajime offering you a quick but sincere apology for his mistake, as the focus shifts back to the main debate now that your absence has an explanation.
but before the moment is fully over, fuyuhiko steps a little closer to you, enough no one can hear him besides you. “don’t ever stand there like that again,” he says. “like you’re ready to take the blame.”
“i wasn’t—”
“yeah, you were.”
his gaze hardens slightly. “and i’m not losing someone because they thought stayin’ quiet was the ‘noble’ move.” he scoffs again. “you wanna do somethin’ stupid for me? fine. make me stuff. yell at me. whatever.”
“but don’t scare me like that.”
then he straightens, composure sliding back in place.
“alright,” he snaps towards the others, irritation returning to his tone. “now that we’re done accusing my girlfriend over a damn leather project, can we focus on the actual murderer?”
now just like that—the Ultimate Yakuza is back, with a new sheath at his side.
and he doesn’t take it off.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
murmurs begin weaving through the courtroom long before anyone directly names you. each proven alibi, gaps in the murder timeline, edges closer to the hours you can’t immediately account for.
kazuichi’s the one who voices it outright. “wait...hold on. Y/N was unaccounted for around that time, wasn’t she?”
it causes hajime to hesitate. “yes. there was that stretch after lunch...”
and like that, the entire attention directs.
nekomaru gestures toward the screen displaying the estimated time of death, his voice booming with conviction. “your whereabouts during that period remain completely unverified! in a situation where every second matters, that gap cannot be dismissed as coincidence!”
“yeah! i checked the training field, and you weren’t there. you weren’t at lunch either.” akane adds in agreement, nodding vigorously.
teruteru tilts his head, squinting at you. “disappearin’ the whole afternoon is mighty convenient, don’tcha think?”
trying to calm things down, hajime glances at you with an almost pleading look. “if there’s a reason, just tell us. this doesn’t have to drag out.”
nonetheless, you shake your head slightly. “i can’t.”
akane groans. “that’s exactly what someone guilty would say!”
nekomaru slams his palm against his podium. “REFUSAL TO TESTIFY ONLY DEEPENS SUSPICION!!”
sonia looks genuinely troubled. “there must be an explanation...i cannot believe she would commit such a crime without reason.”
throughout all this, gundham has not spoken once.
he stands composed, one hand resting on the ends of his scarf, heterochromatic eyes fixed on you with focused intensity. he does not look betrayed. doesn’t look panicked. if anything—he appears to be studying you, as though your silence itself is something to decode.
when teruteru begins speculating that your secrecy is “basically a confession,” gundham finally intervenes.
“you rush to condemn what you cannot perceive,” he says, bandaged hand closing in a fist. “the being you accuse does not reek of murderous intent.”
akane raises a brow. “then why won’t she just explain it?”
gundham’s gaze shifts back to you, sharp but not hostile. “you would endure doubt rather than reveal your purpose prematurely.” it isn’t an accusation, it’s recognition.
well. guess you have no choice but to give in.
a slow exhale drags out of your lips. “it wasn’t supposed to come out like this.”
byakuya frowns. “come out how?”
instead of answering in words, you step away from your podium. the movement alone pulls everyone’s attention on you as you cross to a side table near the monitors—one cluttered with current unused materials from earlier demonstrations—and retrieve something wrapped in dark fabric that you had placed there before the trial began.
ibuki lets out what sounded like a screech of happiness, leaning over to catch a glimpse with a squint. “wait, you had something in here the whole time??”
ignoring the commentary, you carefully unwrap the cloth.
several small garments rest inside, skillfully sewn, sized for creatures no bigger than a pair of cupped hands. each one differs slightly in color and trim, with one tiny symbol embroidered on the back; lightning, wind, shadow, flame. the stitching is reinforced at the seams, and narrow loops were added for secure fastening without restriction in movement.
“those are... miniature cloaks?” someone asked.
“i went to the supermarket to get the materials,” you explain, embarrassment creeping into your voice now that all eyes are on the reveal. “and found a small machine that’d do the sewing smoother than by hand. i didn’t want them falling apart.”
mikan leans forward to take a peek. “th-they’re really detailed...” she compliments with a shy smile.
sonia clasps her hands together, eyes sparkling in delight. “they resemble ceremonial attire for noble companions!”
“so you skipped out the entire afternoon to make hamster outfits?” hiyoko scoffs, side eyeing your craft.
“they’re protective cloaks,” you correct automatically. “gundham mentioned once that small animals are more sensitive to environmental stress. i thought...if i made something durable, they’d be more comfortable.”
your eyes lift to him specifically.
he has stepped closer, his boots quiet against the ground. he doesn’t reach out immediately, just stays there—studying the fabric; the stitching, the accuracy of the embroidered sigils.
“you fashioned these,” he says slowly, voice lower now. “with knowledge of each Deva’s mark.”
“of course. you talk about them a lot.”
“for many to hear...few truly listen.”
gundham finally lifts one of the cloaks, fingers tracing the seam along its edge. there is careful consideration in the way he handles it—genuine evaluation.
the gymnast scratches her head. “so Y/N wasn’t plotting murder. she was sewing.”
“the explanation accounts for the missing time,” chiaki states. “which means the real killer is still loose.”
hajime nods. “yeah...that clears it up.”
paying no mind to the other voices, gundham folds the cloak once and tucks it into the inner lining of his coat rather than returning it back to you.
“this tribute shall not go unacknowledged,” he declares, voice regaining its resonance. “the Dark Devas will don these garments when the hour calls for their protection.” his gaze meets yours again, steady and unmistakably warmer than before. “to craft safeguards for my immortal companions is an act of devotion not easily overlooked.” then he resumes his place in the debate.
yet when a small squeak emerges from within his scarf, he lowers his chin slightly and murmurs under his breath, barely audible over the renewed arguments;
“patience. your new armor awaits.”
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
“okay...so who did it?”
mahiru flips through her notes again. “can’t say yet for sure, but there’s still that missing time block.”
chiaki nods faintly. “if we narrow it down to those who didn’t respond when we tried to find everyone after breakfast...it’d be Y/N.”
“you said you were ‘busy,’” hajime looks at you instead of his evidence. “that’s not really specific.”
sighing, you cross your arms trying to look unaffected. “does it matter?”
“it does if someone died during it.” fuyuhiko snaps.
nagito hums thoughtfully from across the circle, watching the exchange like it’s unfolding exactly as expected.
“how wonderful,” he murmurs. “hope pressed into a corner.”
you shoot him a look. “can you not?”
he smiles, soft and unreadable. “if you’re innocent, this pressure will only refine you.”
“okay, but if she’s not, then we’re ignoring something huge!” kazuichi exclaims while gripping his beanie.
hajime’s voice lowers. “just tell us where you were.”
silence stretches uncomfortably.
you glance at nagito. he isn’t accusing you. but he isn’t defending you either. just stands there watching, waiting to see which outcome will shine brighter.
your jaw clenches.
“...fine.”
avoiding everyone’s eyes, you kneel beside your podium and drag out a narrow paper bag that had been shoved behind it since the start of the trial.
hesitation wraps around your brain for a moment—then you hold up a small wooden box for everyone to see. it’s plain, slightly uneven around the edges, too. but it’s clearly handmade.
heat crawls up your neck after realizing that you now have to explain everything.
“i was in my room,” you mumble. “all day.”
“doing what?” mahiru asks in confusion.
that’s when you open the box; where inside rests a small, polished horseshoe pendant mounted on a thin chain. sanded smooth and carved with a four-leaf clover etched into the curve.
“it’s not like i could just buy something for him,” you say quickly. “i didn’t have the right materials at first, so i had to start over twice. and then the carving wouldn’t come out right, so i stayed longer than i meant to.”
your face feels like it’s burning now. “i was trying to make something that wouldn’t feel fake.”
nobody interrupts. and nagito hasn’t said a word.
you finally stare up—only to see him staring at the pendant like it’s something incomprehensible.
“a charm of luck,” he awes quietly.
“it’s not about luck!” you clarify instantly, mortified since you know how he gets when it comes to that word and hope. “it’s just symbolic, okay? you talk about talents and hope and probability like you’re some disposable stepping stone. i thought maybe if it was something handmade, you wouldn’t feel…like you only deserved it because you got lucky.”
as soon as you finish speaking, you want the floor to open up and swallow you whole.
“so you disappeared all day to make that?” hajime asks gently, not wanting to overwhelm you further.
you nod stiffly.
nagito laughs (not in the maniac way you’ve heard from him once or twice) breathlessly.
“you spent an entire day, on someone as insignificant as me?”
the glare you shoot makes him shut up. “don’t start.”
“how selfish, you’ve given hope a physical form and handed it directly to despair.” he murmurs, then adds, “...if this is your alibi, then i accept it.”
kazuichi throws his hands up. “that’s not how alibis work!”
nagito ignores him completely to fasten the chain around his neck.
“if you invested time into me,” he continues, tone a tad gentler. “then i suppose i must produce a result worthy of it.”
your embarrassment doesn’t fade. but at least the accusations have.
and nagito, for almost the remainder of the trial kept quiet, though his fingers never missed brushing the small carved charm resting against his collarbone.
