NISAR Launched!

NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar

There is a new earth observation satellite at 747 km height, flying over the entire globe every 12 days.

And it has a hat!

It's a radar dish, that will unfold in the next two weeks origami-style and look at the surface.

Looking at the difference between pictures it can inform us about deformation in the solid earth, vegetation change in ecosystems and sea level change. And that can help us mitigate disasters and sustaining resources, like responding to earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides and emptying reservoirs.

All data from NISAR will be freely available one to two days after observation and within hours in case of emergencies like natural disasters.
