Everyone asleep except for me. I was up watching a show
my mother would turn off, trying hard to imagine what sex
was like, why I'd want to do something that made me scream. I'd sit
on the couch with my legs pinned under me, until they felt
like part of the rest of the world.
That summer, my sister and I grew sea-monkeys. We knew they'd never juggle
like they did on the package. We waited until they hatched.
We knew our parents didn't love each other.
They didn't have hands to hold anything.
