Achieving a perfect-white background in Lightroom
Do you want to get a perfect white background in your portraits, or headshot?
In this simple tutorial I will show you how to achieve this in Lightroom, but keep in mind good lighting will always be the base to achieve a perfectly white background. It is possible to do it with poor lighting however it is very time-consuming and the results won’t be as attractive.
The firstling you want to do to achieve this correctly is to check the histogram in camera first and make sure you are getting a blown out background behind the subject. After that you will bring the images into Lightroom and turn on “Show Highlight Clipping” this will show what is blown out and what isn’t.
You will immediately see what is blown out and what isn't, Red means the area is perfect white the rest it is not. Now what you would have to do is paint over the area that is not blown out with a "Adjustment Brush" and setting the "Exposure" to 1.50 to 2, depending on your image this number may be higher or lower.
Try to paint only on the area that you would like to achieve perfect white and not on the subject. If done correctly you should now have an image that has a perfect white background as shown below in the before and after.
