Next! LA Marathon
The last marathon I ran was 2011 Boston. It was before I got into triathlon. Boston was the culmination of running a LOT of marathons to try and qualify. I was pretty sick leading up to race day but still ran my best time with a 3:09. Marathons are ridiculous, but I’m ready for one right now. There’s a voice in my head telling me I need to remember how to suffer, and to push, and master a training progression that isn’t solely about doing as much as I can, for as long as I can, as hard as I can. My goal this year is to go about a minute per mile faster than I did in 2011. After years of shuffling three sports, the simplicity in this last statement warms my heart.
A lot of things have happened in a few years. This year, I am not just running the LA Marathon on February 14th, but I’m also coaching a handful of athletes through a guided CryBabyHouse program. It’s fun. Being partially responsible for other athlete outcomes have made me study a lot to get things right.
For those in the LA area, CryBabyHouse run club happens at 615AM on Mondays and Thursdays, with most runs out of CryBabyHouse. Soon, we will also start meetups for long Sunday runs. Cost is free. Reward is high. Most if not all sessions coached by pro triathlete and former NCAA Div 1 Indoor Mile Champion Sean Jefferson.
A Tale of 2 CryBabies
Sean Jefferson is pretty fearless. I met Sean 4 years ago when he moved out to Los Angeles to swim with Gerry Rodrigues. He was a former indoor mile champion at Indiana University and needed help cooking up speed in his swim as he was transitioning into triathlon. I’ve watched him progress over the years with great dedication. Over the last couple years, he has made a jump into the world class ITU stables, getting starts at the highly prestigious World Cup events in Auckland, Cape Town, Hamburg, and at last Sunday’s grand final in Chicago. He raced valiantly, coming off the bike in the main pack, before being outrun on the 6.2 mile course. What was on the line? If he had finished top 8 overall, he would have been representing the United States in the 2016 Rio Olympics. If it’s difficult to understand how big of a race this was, let me explain it like this - when I was 22 years old, I was able to watch from the living room of my 10 member shared collegiate ‘baseball house’ at the University of Illinois, one of my college roommates make his MLB debut pitching in Yankee Stadium. This rivaled that for me. A very cool afternoon. Sean flew to Chicago without a guaranteed slot to race and was placed on the start line last minute. And then he had the best race he has had against the fastest, toughest competition in the world. He took a step. Now, the march continues, and he’s hungry for more.
Tracy Lonsdale is pretty fearless. I met Tracy around the same time I met Sean, when I was teaching spin classes at Revolution Fitness. She always sat on the left side, in the front corner. Any time I played Prince, her soul would slip away into a seemingly magical land. She showed up consistently and always showed up to do work. When I left Revolution to start CryBabyHouse, she always kept tabs on our progress - through all the struggles of build out and delays. When we finally opened, and I told her clients had to have a bike or use one of ours, she didn’t hesitate. We put her on Katie’s bike and put her through our workouts - power, pace, heart rate…the works. She had never been on a road bike besides a cruiser before and it was probably a bit of a shock to the system. I watched her get knocked down in workouts, or literally fall when we went out on the road for a maiden test ride. But she got up, and she kept coming back. After a couple weeks, she bought her own bike. Now, she comes in 3-4 times a week and does an outstanding job in rides - on top of her pacing, power, effort. She helps guide newbies. I’ve even heard her offer her bike to strangers on the street - telling them they need to go into CryBaby. How damn lucky are we??
Although Tracy’s window to compete in the Olympics as a cyclist or triathlete has likely passed (sorry, darling, if this is hard to hear), Sean and Tracy ride together. Next to one another. Pushing each other - because both show up to train a common thread - elite work ethic, which they both have - which we ALL have when placed in the right environment. Every day at CryBaby, students on every level of the ‘ability’ spectrum are riding or doing strength, conditioning, or yoga side by side.
If you are an amateur chef and had a chance to cook alongside Thomas Kellar or Rene Redzepi, would you not go and claim intimidation?
Or if you were a blogger, would you be afraid to have a chat with David Sedaris or Lena Dunham?
What if you were an entrepreneur afraid to take notes from Oprah or Mark Zuckerberg?
We’re not saying Sean Jefferson is Oprah Winfrey. But if you said it, we might be inclined to agree.
