Although Pop Radar LA missed DesignerCon (DCon) last month at the Anaheim Convention Center, we caught Sean Chao’s oyster sculptures on many Instagram feeds. The L.A.-based artist turned his DCon booth into an oyster bar, where he sold tiny oyster sculptures.
Chao and his oyster stand popped up on Small Business Saturday (Nov. 30) at GR2 on Sawtelle. Some passers-by were totally confused as to why a random oyster bar opened on the sidewalk — the setup and the oysters looked that real. Only until you got up and close did you see the little sculpture (and face) on the half-shell.

The artist uses real oyster shells and then sculpts clay and then paints and adds resin. He says he can create about five a day, each different from the others. Chao’s used to working with smaller scales as he’s known for creating diorama sculptures.
The pop-up oyster bar featured three sizes: Oyoyster Grande (Large) for $120; Oyoyster Creamy (Medium) for $100 and Oyoyster Sweetie (Small) for $80. He also offered a few collectible oyster pins and shirts.
If you missed DCon and the pop-up oyster bar at GR2 this weekend, and you have an oyster lover on your Christmas list, then hit up Chao’s online store.
