SIXTY YEARS AGO tonight, DR. NO, the first James Bond film, premiered in London (it wouldn't be released in the US until May '63). The plot, about a mad scientist who's using atomic power to topple US rockets, was not only of its time--the Cold War between US and the USSR--but was eerily prescient of the Cuban Missile Crisis, which began 11 days later! President John F. Kennedy was a major fan of the Bond books by Ian Fleming--so influential that upon his naming "From Russia with Love" one of his favorite of the series in an interview, the Bond producers rushed the film into production as the 2nd film in the series! JFK had a private screening of DR. NO at the White House, and quipped afterwards, "I wish I had had James Bond on my staff!" Here's video of a recent webinar I did on DR.
