The ubiquity of computers have made piles of data readily available and people are using them to make useful predictions. This “big data” is changing the way we use statistics and it has given rise to some really cool applications:
1–Netflix Ratings. Predictive analytics uses data from yours and others’ viewing and rating patters to make predictions for content you haven’t even watched yet.
2–Facial Recognition Software. Photos are data too. Developer use a boat-load of sample photos to “train” a computer program to identify people’s faces. This is called machine learning, a form artificial intelligence that uses statistics to develop computer algorithms. These artificial neural networks are also used in Alexa, Siri and the thumb print reader on your iPhone.
Medicine
3–Medical Treatments. Survival analysis is used to find treatments that predict the highest levels of success for patients given their physical characteristics and medical backgrounds.
Engineering
4–Dependability. Reliability analysis is used to determine how long one can expect a part to last given temperature, thickness, material, etc. Applied to a system, analyses can determine which component is most likely to fail first.
Business
5–Marketing. Who would like our product? Who should we gear our ads to? These are questions advertisers want to know. Data mining is being used to sift through piles of customer data to find patterns and identify most likely customers. It isn’t all about numbers either, text mining uses statistics to find patterns in text-based data such as Amazon customer reviews.
6–Insurance Quotes. Actuaries use statistics to weigh risk and determine the optimal price to offer their insurance.
Social Science Research
7–Education. I thought I’d include this one because this is how I use statistics. I use statistical modeling to determine factors that lead to desirable student outcomes. I explore data to determine which teaching practices, after-school programs, courses, attitudes, etc. predict success in mathematics.
This is just a taste of what statistics can offer. I was compelled to write this because I feel statistics doesn’t get a lot of attention. Probably because of the fact that most people are lucky to take even one stats course in high school, but that’s an issue for another day.
The ruling holds that a company that designs, trains, operates, and manages an AI system must assume legal liability for any damages caused
A local court in Germany has issued a ruling that could reshape the operation of search engines and artificial-intelligence-based chatbots worldwide. The Munich Regional Court preliminarily ruled that Google is liable for a series of false statements generated by its AI Overviews feature, requiring the company to prevent the dissemination of erroneous or inaccurate claims through its search engine.
The ruling stems from a case first reported by the Decoder, in which two publishers discovered that Google’s AI-generated summaries linked them, in certain searches, to questionable business practices, scams, and subscription-related frauds, without any basis for doing so.
Earlier this year, the affected companies sent the tech giant a cease-and-desist letter, according to the report. Google denied liability, arguing that its automatic summary feature warns users that the information may contain errors and should be independently verified.
The court's analysis concluded that Google’s AI combined information corresponding to other companies that had been flagged for possible illicit practices with data from the plaintiffs, generating associations that did not appear in any of the sources linked by the search engine.
The authorities found that, unlike traditional search engines, which merely display lists of links with statements made by third parties, Google’s tool produced “independent, new, and substantial statements” based on a misinterpretation of information available on the internet.
According to the court, correcting misinformation is not the responsibility of third parties. Google is the only entity with the ability to modify the technology underpinning its AI-generated summaries and, therefore, “must be held accountable.” Furthermore, the court found that Google's line of defense lacked merit, since the challenged summary “contains statements that do not appear at all in the search results.
A New (and Forceful) Interpretation of AI on the Web
The court's interpretation of AI’s role in presenting search results could make this case a historic precedent. It finds a large tech company responsible for the influence of its most advanced developments on widely used platforms.
Until now, in most legal systems, search engines have been considered tools that merely facilitate access to content created by third parties and available on the web. This status has afforded them a certain level of protection when the published information is false, inaccurate, misleading, or even defamatory.
However, the German court held that this safeguard no longer applies when search engines incorporate generative AI systems. According to its reasoning, this technology is capable of producing nonexistent claims based on multiple sources and, consequently, the companies responsible for operating it must assume liability for the resulting content.
The judges also concluded that while Google encourages users to verify information due to the potential for hallucinations inherent in AI models, this warning does not absolve the content distributor of liability. Otherwise, they argued, victims of false statements would be virtually defenseless, since the original sources never made those statements and, therefore, could not be subject to legal action.
Likewise, the court held that results generated by an AI system cannot be protected under the principles of free speech, as they are the product of an algorithm designed, trained, and managed by a company, and not the expression of an individual opinion.
As a precautionary measure to prevent possible recurrence, the ruling required Google to remove a large portion of the statements deemed defamatory in this case, and to cover 80 percent of the legal costs arising from the proceedings.
A company spokesperson, quoted by Ars Technica, suggested that the decision could be appealed. “We invest deeply in the quality of AI Overviews to ensure that the overwhelming majority of responses provide accurate information, and they are designed to reflect the information that exists on the web," the statement says. "We’re carefully reviewing this decision, which is not yet final.”
Israel’s expanding algorithmic arsenal has also changed the day-to-day administration of the occupation across the Palestinian territories. Today Israeli soldiers and border police are armed with tablets and smartphone cameras as well as assault rifles as they patrol East Jerusalem and the West Bank. They rely on biometric databases, keyword queries of intercepted communications, and programs that scrape social media to guide arrests. These tools allow soldiers to access the intimate details of Palestinians’ private lives, like who someone called and what they said, where they went and at what time, how they used the internet or social media, and what they photographed on a given day. This surveillance dragnet gives the military new rationales for longstanding practices of mass policing and detention, which officials tout as precisely targeted even when their effects are indiscriminate and brutal. “We always had surveillance, we always had mass detention,” Sahar Francis, a Palestinian lawyer and longtime human rights defender, told me in mid-December. “Now it’s just much easier for them to arrest more people.”

This routine had become norm. A million little sensors scanning every detail of your face or certain segments of your body. Someone filming you at nearly every moment to capture ticks, body language, subconscious gestures, and the like. Observers taking note of how your thoughts reflected in your face or body.
Months went by with you getting paid six figures just to be watched while you accompanied Nathan to all his scheduled events and meetings. You started off fairly low in the company, just another BlueBook employee responsible for some administrative office tasks.
Five years passed in the company and you advanced relatively quickly, so you ended up brushing shoulders with the founder himself. Nathan had you work directly for his upper-crust section of the office after those interactions.
Bots took up much of his time creatively - figuring out just how to program a consciousness that could eventually be confused for that of a real person's. He went off to his remote home to work on those all on his own, putting together prototype after prototype. They were good, better each time, yet still missing something that would make him satisfied with his work.

All that data went into his algorithms for the bots to seem more realistic. One time you'd flirted with him overtly enough that he kissed you and from then on, you figured out just how to push all his buttons. Which made the work a little more entertaining for you. When you joined him in his home, it was just him and all his room cameras. Even that, you got accustomed to.
But this, was new.
"It's a vital part of human consciousness, people act fuckin' illogical because of it... I can't completely discount a factor that impacts decision-making just 'cause some pearl-clutching idiot thinks it's unnecessary." Nathan pontificated, setting his palms over his shaved head in frustration.

You sighed, feeling your resolve get chipped away little by little as he spoke. Nathan could be very manipulative, but this was not one of those situations - you could always read through his bullshit. He was being sincere. Almost sweet, if he was capable of it.
There was a good point in saying no one would know what part of the data came from you. A lot of it was already coming from you but millions of other data sources were also included in the mix. He knew he had you sold, even just a little bit, while staring at your shifting expression.
By the time you met eyes with him, you knew he was just waiting for you to admit to his victory. A small nod was the initial answer you gave him, dropping your gaze again before growing a bit bolder in your decision. You had to sigh first, just to let him know what a sacrifice it was for you.
"Okay. I'll let you do it. Just never tell a soul about this process or I will hack into your code and make the next bot wring your neck."

The process of observation changed a few things from the norm. Consistent eye contact, or a mirror where Nathan could keep his gaze fixed on your reactions. Slow pace and very focused on every motion. Everything was intentional.
He would add one small thing for a minute then switched up to try something new. Degradation followed by praise. Temperature play. Pressure on the neck. Holding you up against a wall. Then letting you take charge and he unquestioningly followed. Just a little bit of everything - for research, of course.
His beard scratched at the side of your neck as he leaned in by your ear, "There you go, baby, fuck yeah..."
The whispered, gravely praise made your walls start to clench which, in turn, made Nathan hiss between his teeth. Just as quickly, he nearly laughed at how affected you were by it. He decided to give you a little more praise, just to make sure he'd get the same response from you.
It was the most enjoyment you'd ever seen Nathan have in his work. He reached a hand down to your hip, gripping at you for stronger leverage to keep going at you. Maybe this research would be enjoyable enough for you to forget about the fact that he'd be putting this experience into his next data set.
