Staycation 2014 New Surf Spots: Cardiff and Seaside Reef - Cardiff By The Sea, CA
The swell had picked up considerable by our 4th day. Yew! We decided to try our luck at the famed, Cardiff Reef. To say it was packed was a bit of an understatement. I have to admit I am not that aggressive of a surfer, especially at new spots, and I tend to sit on the inside and try to pick off the leftovers or smaller waves. I realized rather quickly that this technique would not work at this spot. The place was mainly long boarders and SUPers who could get into every wave with ease and there was no way that a wave was going to be missed. If I was going to get a wave I was going to have to paddle up to the peak and that is just what I did. I'm glad I did as I ended up getting some of the best rides of the trip, mainly lefts since I didn't have to jockey so hard to get those, but I did sneak into a few solid lefts. The local crew ended up being really nice and I made a few new surf friends out there. I think this was the one time that being a girl really had it's benefits in the surf as people were really nice to me and I was able to get a lot of waves.
After our session we got on our bikes and rode over to Kei's for smoothies and then over to Cardiff Reef to see how the waves were shaping up over there. The waves looked a little peakier and it was less crowded so we set up there to surf and hang out for the rest of the day. It ended up being a little more challenging as the peak was super shifty but I was still got a few waves and JP had more fun then he had over at Cardiff so it was a good day for both of us!

My heart goes out to the entire Nancarrow family. Not only was Loren a great weatherman for sunny San Diego for over 30 years, but he was also a dedicated environmentalist and father.
