Back in 1983 we had just opened a flag shop on Thames Street in Newport, Rhode Island. It was a thrilling time because it was the year of the America’s Cup race. The New York Yacht Club’s yacht, Liberty, was racing against the Royal Perth Yacht Club’s challenger, Australia II. In September of 1983 the race was won by Australia II in the first successful challenge of the NYYC’s 132-year defense of the Cup. We made many boxing Kangaroo flags during this time. The boxing kangaroo is a national symbol of Australia, frequently displayed at sporting events. Today we received an email from the starboard sail trimmer for the winning yacht, Australia II. He sent us this photo of a framed boxing kangaroo flag that we made, and shared other photos from that exciting time. He is trying to track down a flag that went missing during the celebrations following the Australian win. Wishing him luck tracking down the flag as we approach the 40th anniversary of Australia’s victorious win of the America’s Cup trophy! 🏆 #seattleflagmakers #flag #newportri #americascup #boxingkangeroo https://www.instagram.com/p/Cj3j-Cky4GQ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
