Writemas 2025: Day 11
Thank you to @agirlandherquill for organizing this event!
WIP: Second Chances WIP
Prompt(s): "I'm walking away now... Not coming back." / A forbidden forest / A tragic choice / A lovable lie
Words: 509
Notes: The last one was kind of dark, so have something a little bit silly between Talea and Edith.
Talea flopped onto the ground next to Edith. “I give up.”
“Already?” she asked.
“It’s been half an hour.”
Edith looked up from her book. “It’s been maybe fifteen minutes.”
Writemas 2025: Day 8 (Version 2)
Thank you to @agirlandherquill for doing this again!
WIP: Second Chances WIP
Prompt(s): "There's more to this than we were told." / A hunter's snare / She longed for life, nothing else.
Words: 960
Notes: Talea having a wonderful time in the woods again.
Talea ran from the shadow creatures. There were three of them on her heels as she dodged between trees and over roots. All she needed to do was lead them away from Quincy and Edith before blasting the creatures with enough light that they slunk back to wherever they came from. If she could summon the light again. All she’d been able to create on command were strange floating lights that were pretty but didn’t have any practical use.
She fell, left side hitting the ground hard. Leaves flew around her and obscured her view. She swore and tried to stand and move forward, but her foot was caught.
A hunter’s snare. Rope wrapped around her ankle. Glass shards embedded in the rope bit into her skin.
Writemas 2025: Day 16
Thank you to @agirlandherquill for organizing this event!
WIP: Second Chances WIP
Prompt(s): She would live her lie, if it meant that she lived. / A vastness of vines / "You're risking it all without anyone else knowing?" / "There's some chances you just have to take." / The harshness of healing
Words: 588
Notes: I sent this to my friend and her response was "TALEA NO!!" so. Let that set the tone for your reading.
Talea rolled her eyes, face pinching with disgust. “Because I’m not naive enough to believe we can win this. If you want to plan our deaths, fine, but don’t expect me to help.”
She spun on her heel and strode from the room. Behind her, she could hear Edith and Quincy arguing with Gideon, telling him to let her go and that she’d be back soon. Good. That was what she’d hoped for. They were so focused on coming up with the perfect plan that they wouldn’t notice her sneaking off to enact her own plan.
Not that it was much of a plan.

A longer bit, from Second Chances WIP:
Talea leaned against the railing next to him with her back to the gardens. “You’re a terrible liar.” “I’m not lying. The Wychwood feels uneasy tonight. If I happen to be observing it from a spot where I can also keep an eye on my kid sister, then that is purely coincidental.” “‘Kid sister?’ She’s twenty-two.” Gideon flicked a withering look at her. She sighed. “You and your brothers—but especially you—should leave her be. She’s old enough to make her own mistakes without you all hovering and telling her what to do.” “So you agree her attachment to Wren is a mistake?” “I don’t. He’s smart, sweet, and completely smitten with her. There are much worse men she could’ve picked,” she said. “My point is that even if it does end up being a mistake, and it turns out terribly, it’s still her mistake to make. How else will she learn?”
If you can't tell from Talea's sudden maturity, this is a scene from later in the story lol.

This is a snippet I wrote for Second Chances WIP bc it was so clear in my head. It's a bit long, but it's fun!
Talea had a half-second to take stock of her situation: the rough hand covering her mouth, the blade pressed against her throat, the dark cloak fluttering at the edge of her peripheral vision. An assassin. The realization was dispassionate, more annoyed than truly afraid. If it was one she knew they would’ve had the decency to face her directly before attempting to murder her, so it must’ve been someone new. Probably sent by Scarlett—she was sure she’d met all of Delphine’s assassins over her years of keeping Gideon alive.
She screamed shrilly against the hand and let her knees give out. The arm attached to the knife clamped across her chest to keep her from collapsing to the floor, forcing the blade away from her skin.
“Please, please don’t kill me, please,” she begged as tears streamed down her face. She didn’t fight to get away but let herself become dead weight so the assassin had to awkwardly hold her up.

From Second Chances WIP, bc that's what I have open:
LITTLE
“I’m not trying to insult you, Gideon.” She paused, ignoring the pang of guilt that radiated through her. He’d flinched when she’d said his name. “You shouldn’t have to give up your own comfort for me.”
“You have guest rights, and as the person responsible for you during your stay, I have a duty to see to your well-being.”
Her shoulders slumped. He was practically quoting the laws of hospitality, which meant there was very little she could do to argue his decision.

Have a little something from Second Chances WIP:
Bitterness wound its way through her bloodstream and around her breaking heart like a poisonous vine.
