Little note about Gideon being Third Fleet...
I assume the writers wanted to make it like he was second rate, like the First Fleet is the most famous, right? Aussies learn about that one at school but usually less about the other fleets. But the writers couldn't put Gideon in charge of the Second Fleet because that fleet was so fucking horrific in their treatment of the convicts that of the 1038 convicts, more than a quarter of them died during the trip, 486 were sick when they landed, and 125 of those sick died after landing. In comparison, the First Fleet had about the same numbers of convicts but only 24 people died and less than 30 arrived sick.
The British government had contracted 3 ships from a company whose previous experience had been shipping slaves to America. They also paid the company a flat fee per convict regardless of whether they got the convict there alive or dead, so they withheld rations, even stole clothes and the few possessions the convicts had, and left them chained in the hold the whole voyage. when news got back to England there was an enquiry, but the only legal action taken was against the Master of the Neptune (who'd been described as a demented sadist) and his Chief Mate for murder of 3 people, the trial lasted 3 hours and both were acquitted for no apparent reason.
