Secondhand Faith was the song I needed today. I don't know if tween/teen me could've predicted EA stuff would still be resonating as I'm nearing thirty, it kinda surprises me now. But there is still very much a time and place for her music, it just does something for me that nothing else has. Enchant especially is irreplaceable, so many of those tracks feel etched in still, somehow, at double the age when I found them.
It's been years since I listened to EA's music on a regular basis, but I still sing "Second hand faith" in my head every time I'm cleaning out my house ("I can do without a book I'll never read"...)
Criminal by Fiona Apple has GOT TO BE where Emilie drew influence for Second Hand Faith. I've just heard Criminal for the first time and was blown away by how similar the songs sound!
It took me, no joke, five years to realize "sitting in a Chinese restaurant / someone comes to offer me / a little secondhand faith" was about fortune cookies, and I love it. I relate a lot to being so desperate for some kind of divine sign that things will be okay for you that you start putting weight in what a cheap fortune cookie says. Still kinda mad at myself that it took me that long to figure it out though
A Lakota friend of mine recently shared a post about the way white people will invite Native speakers to events, get all emotional and guilty ("What we did to your people was terrible! You're so strong!"), and then immediately proceed to hawk on them for mystical guidance and ancient shamanic wisdom - projecting the "spiritual hunger" of Western culture without actually wanting to give up its privileges, basically. I thought about it, and it gave "Second Hand Faith" a whole new meaning to me...
