I feel like there may be a double meaning of Miss Believer, it could mean that she is a believer or that she has disbelief about something since the prefix “mis-” often means the opposite of the root word. So it could mean that she believes or doesn’t believe in something, like things getting better or that the singer can actually help or be there for her.
Throughout the song I feel like we can slowly see her move more from the disbelief to believing side of the spectrum. She also moves from numbness or sleep of depression to eventually feeling and weeping.
Ms believer obviously is struggling with feelings of sadness or dark thoughts hence the “Your twisted mind is like snow on the road/Your shaking shoulders prove that it’s colder/Inside your head/In the winter of dead” lines. To me the “winter of dead” line shows how empty and numb she feels inside, as does the “pretty sleeper” line. When you are depressed or very sad you can feel like that a bit, like you’re in a cold barren land sleep walking through it all, lost and not feeling anything. Her struggle is internal and she feels like she is alone even though the singer is besides her telling her that he loves her. She is doesn’t believe in or is oblivious to this external encouragement because she is wrapped up in her own negative thoughts, “I will tell you I love you/But the muffs on your ears will cater your fears”, her numbness to the external world further confirms her fears that she is all alone.
The singer decides to trudge through the snow with Ms believer, or to be with her in her fight against depression. He starts off thinking it will easy and starts with a fast pace, “My nose and feet are running as we start/To travel through snow/Together we go” but soon matches Ms believer’s pace by slowing down. The struggle is difficult, “We get colder/As we grow older/We will walk/So much slower”, but he is willing to perverse with Ms Believer no matter now long it takes or how difficult it is.
We begin to see things slowly improve, even though the changes are very subtle. At first the lines are “Oh, Miss Believer, my pretty sleeper/Your twisted mind is like snow on the road” and later in the song the lines are “Oh, Miss Believer, my pretty weeper/Your twisted thoughts are like snow on the rooftops”. She goes from the numbness and indifference of depression (“pretty sleeper”) to actually being able to feel something, she is finally able to cry (“pretty weeper”). Also her “twisted mind” become just “twisted thoughts”, her whole mind is not longer messed up, just some of her thoughts. The position of the snow also changes which I think is significant, at first it is on the road meaning that they will have to fight though it with every step, but the snow is later on the rooftops. If snow is on the rooftops, I see them walking under the rooftops, the roofs keeping the snow off the ground making the roads clearer (or it could mean that they are finally warm inside a house). I also think that Ms Believer is more likely to take the singer’s hand at the end because it is more tangible and more of a real promise that they will get through this together than just the words “I love you”, and she finally believes him because they are traveled and gone through things together. This is how in the song Ms Believer goes from disbelief to belief that someone can help her and from the not feeling to feeling, she now does not feel alone in the barren landscape of her mind because someone was willing to perverse with her through her struggles.
