Preston Wells probably had some kind of excuse for the dead bodies mounting in his wake. Shiloh was on a mission to ruin his life anyway.
The first dead woman to find her had been bad. The second one was worse, and homeless rather than a working girl. And then came number three, who spoke of there being number four and five under his thumb.
The bodies had been dumped in the Everglades. Likely were already digesting in the local wild life. And so, weren’t really an option. She wasn’t going to be able to find them. And besides, alerting the police to bodies was. Suspicious. She hadn’t been in Miami more than a month, and she was tired of moving.
Which was why she was lurking outside his front door, picking the locks the way Grandma Rosalind had taught her. The house weighed on the world around it like a black hole.
A lot of people had died here. Or to the hand of someone within it.
For a murderer, the man didn’t have very good locks. Maybe he doesn’t think he has anything to hide, she thought glumly. It was too late now in any case. The front door swung open at her touch. Her eyes were already adjusted to the dark, and with the orange sodium glow of the streetlights coming in through the windows there was plenty of ambient light to navigate with.
Shiloh didn’t bother with the living room, or the other common areas of the house. If the man had any sort of brain, he wouldn’t leave anything incriminating out to be discovered.
No basement, she noted. And --
She paused, head cocked to the side in a listening pose. Was that -- crying? Light spilled from the crack under a door at the end of the hall. The back of the house.
Number six?
Shiloh went for the door without a thought in her head other than rescue.
Bright lights. Something shining on every surface -- for a second she had no idea what she was looking at. Then she saw -- Preston Wells. Or rather -- as she stared -- the newly-made corpse of Preston Wells. There was another man, in a clear plastic rain coat. Murdering him.
For one black and curiously calm moment, all she could think was; Well, that does solve the problem.
Then logic came crashing back into her skull because that was a big man with a fucking knife and she was a witness.
Long hair streaming behind her, Shiloh turned and bolted like a rabbit.
Some Empire Records pictures for Rex Manning Day. In celebration, Aelberyn is totally going to damn the man and get shocked by that deviant behavior.
A Debt Denied
Elaianna’s first week back in Kul Tiras had already been busy. Between the growing rumours, both of her own lands and of Lady Jaina Proudmoore being arrested by her own mother, a cloud of worry hovered wherever the Duchess went. A requisition was placed for a number of her men and women. There were whispers of Horde not so far away at Brennadam. A thought that made her gut twist. She had brought her little girls to Kul Tiras to avoid war, and it had still managed to follow.
Stormhollow’s allegiance had been declared, changed from an allegiance to House Stormsong, despite being upon and a part of that House’s lands. Elaianna’s personal loyalties were always with the Proudmoores, but her Uncle’s, the Duke that used to run the lands, had been to a benevolent Lord Stormsong. But where was that benevolence now?
Banners and flags depicting House Stormsong’s crest were pulled down. Rather than have the duchy’s own crest fly on it’s own, the green of the Proudmoore Admiralty was hoisted up as well. Stormhollow needed allies, and she hoped that she’d find some among the nobles loyal to Proudmoore.
Then came the collector who needed dealing with. He was not greeted by the usual set of faces. Elaianna had made exception, and had gone down to the town with her husband and an entourage of guards. A statement was made not just by her denying the collector, but by doing it personally. Her people would not be forced into hard labour. Her people had the protection of their Lord and Lady, and she would defend them from anyone who tried to take them.
Thus, the collector was sent on his way to inform his Lord of the denial.
