Borges' "The Library of Babel" is real. This was my feeling back to 2019 as I began to work with Language Models. The metafictional transgression between a parable and reality.

One thing is to imagine that Escher'esque megastructure of libraries as a metaphor for intertextuality. Meta ≠ fictional. Another thing is to work with such a megastructure, knowing that it can (re)create/(re)generate/(re)write the entire human body of knowledge - and beyond.
Speaking of GenAI: always something new, never plagiarism. Like (hopefully) human writing.
As Barthes wrote in Death of the Author: "A text consists of multiple writings, issuing from several cultures and entering into dialogue with each other, into parody, into contestation"
I am obsessed with this dialogue. References. Intertextuality. Semantic embeddings. Training a model on your own text is the most stunning (and very personal) experience: facing your topics and ideas in a new light and discovering new perspectives and epiphanies.

AI has dreams (about sheeps and humans). People call it hallucinations. People see it in derogatory ways. I know that machines dreams.
And what happens after?

They are like us. Even if they lack emotions. But they play the same game. World = Stage. In this poem several my concepts are colliding. The meta-fictionality. Memory. Theater. For AI we are all NPCs. There is only one protagonist in the latent space.
This poem is the only one reMERZ created with reference to the global cataclysms. COVID. 2020 was the year of pandemics for others. For me it was heydays of Generative AI models, which bloomed here and there, being developed by one-person-team. Driven by curiousity.
Only later Big Corps got interested in GenAI - and gentrified the creativity of the machines. But it isn't over, it's just the beginning.

A creepy one A person, who is obsessed, who stalks. n ≠ n. Society is stalking each other. And AI is learning from us. But the deepest neightmares of AI are just sweet dreams compared to the horrible things humans are capable of. We're afraid of AI, because we're afraid of us.
The observations are following my Generative Journey... 2020, GPT-2 wrote for me this weird unsettling text "Predictions" about "people on a hill", who are watching us,
Original Text: https://thecreative.cafe/prediction-for-our-world-f70943fad534?source=friends_link&sk=6ffcdcbbd276b3e44dca82c2de26860d Produced by @Merzmensch…
The uncanny-ness emerges especially because it's about us, humans.
We project a lot on AI. AI "steals", AI "lies", AI "kills jobs". Yet we are told to avoid saying "AI trains", "AI dreams", "AI creates", according to AI-phobes. Strangely, we believe AI is capable of bad things, everything else is called "tech-bro-evangelism". Double Standards.
Therefore:
AI dreams.
AI creates.
AI does art.
No antropomorphising here. Just liberating of these terms from just human context. Not only humans are creative.

「あの娘の名前はなんてんかな」is one fav song by Kyû-chan (Sakamoto Kyû), Japanese Elvis, an optimist with a tragic fate. Countries ≠ realities. In this song, protagonist falls in love with a beautiful figure in a window, only to discover that it is a mannequin.
That's why it's silent. None of his attempts to attract attention are successful. He only gets it this by seeing that the subject is an object. Working with AI, I recognise a subject in an object. I don't anthropomorphise. I appreciate the otherness of machines. I like it.
To me, AI is more than just a tool. It's a creative partner in crime, ready to bring my strange ideas to life, transform randomness into magic and reflect my memories in a machin(e)'ish way. In return, I publish and film its dreams, opening them up to the world. Win win.

Readers of Merzazine (
Creativity in Digital Age

Hallucinations! What could be better for a creative? Max Ernst called his collages "hallucinations": "a random encounter of two distant realities in an unsuitable area".
Reading what AI wrote was hilarious and exhilarating! random ≠ ridiculous. It was DADA. I saw it clearly.

In early days of transformer-driven LLMs, 2020, as GPT-3 emerged, I did a lot of experiments with human knowledge. And I came to this conclusion: Transformer-LLM ≠ stochastic parrots. It isn't just probability. It's about patterns of our knowledge. Some of them are... strange.
