The Secret Miracle.

Today is the birthday of my favorite short story writer, Jorge Luis Borges. In high school, I was lucky enough to have an English teacher with the good sense to introduce the class to Borges through the story ‘Three Versions of Judas.” This was a Catholic school, which is surprising because the story is about a very intriguing blasphemy. You should check it out.

But today I am reminded of another Borges story, The Secret Miracle. The main character is a playwright and a political prisoner during a regime change. He is sentenced to death by firing squad, which is distressing to him because he has not finished the final two acts of his magnum opus play.

God grants him a secret miracle, and as the bullets fly towards him, time slows to a halt so that he can finish the play in his mind.

My image today is not from Borges, but from the ancient Chinese Book of Changes, the I Ching. The hexagram resembles a house or a grand entrance archway. The meaning is time stands still, as in Borges’ The Secret Miracle.

My long term work Visa application hit a snag. We have to wait for an appointment next week. Time has stood still. We can’t cross the threshold. Stagnation.

And yet in its own way it is our secret miracle. We have more time to get our shit together...find a renter for our house, get our possessions into storage, organize our yard sale, fix our plumbing emergency, sell our car. This is our own version of the Zen parable about the wild horse. In the microscopic view, each event looks like good luck or bad luck, but the wise man always replies, “We’ll see.” And as the story gets a bigger and bigger frame of reference the reader is taught that you can’t answer the question when you can’t know the staring point nor the ending point and the perception of each event changes, and ultimately is simultaneously both good luck and bad luck. Yin Yang.

And that is ultimately the point of Borges’ story Three Versions of Judas. Judas is simultaneously the bad guy and the most important person in the entire passion play.

Will we ever get our Visa? Will we ever rent our house? Will we ever fix our plumbing?

We’ll see.
