Sam Estwick, one of the first black men in the #rcaf, stuck to his guns in the face of pervasive institutionalised #racism to do more than the menial labour offered to him. He trained as a #radar mechanic at #raf Clinton (in Ontario, Canada) and served in England and India. He continued in the rcaf after the war in the #telecommunication branch, instructed at Clinton, worked at numerous radar sites, and retired a Flight Lieutenant in 1963. He went on to work in the #electronics industry, founding his own company in 1980. He passed away in 2008 at the age of 92. Source: @globeandmail May 2, 2008. #radar mechanics usually had their own kits which they protected keenly. If they lost a tool it could be weeks before it was replaced. This kit was for a generating set and belonged to #rcaf #cpl Olson who served on bases in #britain during #wwii. Collection of the #secretsofradarmuseum.
Part of our #H2X radar unit and display. The H2X was self-contained navigational radar installed in big #bombers such as the #b29. It was an American improvement on British H2S and made its debut late in 1943. Donated in 2013 to #secretsofradarmuseum by D.
