Marinette Agreste had gotten used to her lonely life. Her father, Gabriel was head of the fashion empire in Paris. Most said she was lucky, but she didn’t feel very lucky. She did everything to impress him, even had started making her own clothes. He was never around to show though. Instead, she spent her days alone at their manor, usually in their gardens. That’s when Tikki showed up she was elated. Finally, a chance to be free and explore the world. Being Ladybug was a sensation that Marinette couldn’t even begin to explain. At first, she’d thought that she’d have to be alone as Ladybug too, but then Chat Noir had come along. Her partner made her life so much more interesting, and she looked forward to their casual nightly patrols. Her loneliness still persisted during the day. She was tutored at home, and expected to be the very prim and proper heiress she was destined to be. She was expected to marry for status and not for love, and when she wasn’t Ladybug, it all came crashing back down upon her. Damn their social standards. She’d often considered running away and making her way to live a simple life in the country, but she couldn’t leave Chat Noir. She couldn’t leave her dearest friend and partner.
Today was one of those days where the duo had been going about their daily business when an akuma attack occurred. Perhaps one of the best things about being Ladybug was the fact that she didn’t have to wear a dress, instead could wear a pantsuit and not be yelled at for it. Even when riding her horse her father wanted her to be proper. After the fight she bid Chat a farewell, and went away, ducking into one of her father’s buildings, unaware of Chat even watching. Ladybug emerged as Marinette, pulling her coat on over her fine dress. She checked her watch and frowned, hiking her skirts up and rushing back towards her father’s estate, her long hair billowing out behind her. If she could just be Ladybug things would be easier. Or really, if she could just dress like Ladybug things would be easier. Corsets and petticoats and three layers of skirts were far too much and far too annoying.
The day passed into night quickly, and Marinette was disappointed to hear her father would be missing their meal together, but she wasn’t really surprised. She went up to her room and out onto the balcony, looking over Paris and feeling very much like the princesses locked away in towers her mother had read about when Marinette was just a little girl, no higher than Gabriel’s knee. A longing sigh slipped past her lips. Marinette was lonely, and was desperate for a friend. Ever since her mother had died, Gabriel had pulled away and hardly even looked at her. She suspected it was because of how similar they looked. Her eyes drifted over the Paris skyline, and she leaned against the railing, having no idea that a certain black cat was watching her.
And so the girl cried at night, talked to herself and wondered, why did she let go of something that kept her from believing a new beginning? The voices beside her answered, "maybe because you're afraid that you'll lose it someday". But she thought to herself, "i'm just unsure of everything". She heard the voice once more, "you can't let go of yesterday". The girl whispered, "i tried to but i just can't no matter what". Then they spoke to her, "why won't you take chances?" The girl never uttered a word. She was into her fantasies and in fact she forgot the whole conversations in the darkness. Suddenly, she remembered it. Attentively she smiled and called the voices, "i think i should give it a go. I think i'm finally ready". But then she realized that nobody responded to her anymore. The voices were already gone. She was too late to even react and make an action. She finally succombed to her sadness, closed her eyes and cried.
