CTF: Hash Collisions

dWith context, this weeks lectures included Hash functions. Having concepts like collisions and other hash functions in my head, the following CTF challenge was going to be easy...I thought. 

ssh’ing into the pwnable server I was greeted with 3 files:

flag - can’t be read

col.c - read permissions

col - executable

Running cat on the col.c file shows:

So the program expects a password, runs it through a primitive hash function and compares it to a set value, hashcode = 0x21DD09EC, and finally displays the flag to the terminal. 

The argument to the program - lets call it password - needs to be a length of 20. So my first attempts was something similar to brute force. I got a list of all the ASCII characters from the web, copied a permutation algorithm from geeksforgeeks and ran the check_password function on all the different combinations of passwords possible. This took way too long. 

I knew the answer lied within understanding the hash function and how it calculated a resultant value out of a const char*. I learned that when you convert a string (20 bytes in this case) to an int (4 bytes), you need to divide the string into sections of 4 bytes => 20/4=5 => that’s why there is a weird i<5 in the for loop on line 6. 

Now, I need 5 numbers that when added together equal 0x21DD09EC = 568134124. So we can have 0x21DD09EC = 0x06C5CEC8 * 4 + 0x06C5CECC or any other combination. The simplest way to represent this in string form is to use perl syntax and inject some code into the program argument. Except this went something like this.

Thankfully under the same article of converting char* I revisited Little endian and big endian and was able to remedy my solution.
