La construction au Cambodge : euh... sécurité?... || Cambodian construction and... security?...
-------------------------------
Up until now, I've seen Cambodia as a "better India": better water and electricity systems, better hygiene and access to hygiene, cleaner streets, less chaotic traffic, etc. But when it comes to construction, both countries are quite similar -- at least regarding security.
A few weeks ago before going to work, I took a peek at my window and saw this man (from the first picture above) doing some renovations at our neighbour building. It's quite impressive how much his security is a stake here!! His scaffolding is barely made out of a few pieces of wood that are kinda holding on. And no need to tell you that he is not attached to anything.
A few days later, I saw him perched on the roof (just the second floor, but still!), not yet attached! It's quite impressive -- I would never do that!!
I have to say though that construction is probably one of the only fields where Cambodians are both efficient and fast! They can build you a relatively good quality construction in such a little time! For instance, they started building a commemorative building for King-Father Norodom Sihanouk's cremation, which will happen in a few days. In a month, they are able to construct everything, with metal-beam structures, on a quite large piece of land!! Quite impressive. I have to say that I admire them for that! In Canada and Europe, it's usually the rule of the man that works, and the four other guys that watch him, and contracts that are never done in time! haha!
