The use of motorbikes and weapons including sticks, cutlasses, knives and firearms by supporters of all political parties during campaigns have been banned across Taraba by heads of security agencies in the state.
Vanguard reports that the decision was taken on Tuesday, December 4, after a stakeholders' meeting with political parties and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at the police headquarters in Jalingo, the Taraba state capital.
We gathered that the security agencies said the use of the banned items pose security threat, adding that lawlessness would not be tolerated in the state
The commissioner of police in the state, David Akinremi, said: âAny political party involved would be dealt with decisively."
The police chief called on parents and guardians to monitor their wards, adding that security agencies in the state would not tolerate lawlessness and the use of political thugs.
In the same vein, tate director of Department of State Services (DSS), Shehu Abdullahi, said a firm resolution had been taken by security chiefs, adding that defaulting political parties would be dealt with.
Meanwhile, we previously reported that rampaging youth in Jalingo on Monday, July 16, pelted Taraba commissioner of police, David Akinremi, with stones, injuring him on the head.
The commandâs spokesperson, David Misal, an assistant superintendent of police, who confirmed the incident to journalists in Jalingo, the state capital said, the commissioner had gone to the Tudun Wada area of the metropolis with a team of officers to restore normalcy following reports of youths unrest.
He said: âHe was hit on the head with a stone resulting in serious bleeding before he was rushed to the hospital, where he was treated and discharged.
âSince yesterday, some irate youth, armed with dangerous weapons, including cutlasses, axes and other objects, started disturbing the peace of residents around Tudun Wada and Gadan Boboji areas of Jalingo town. Our men were deployed there and normalcy returned."
In another previous report by us, the Taraba state police command on Tuesday, September 18, said they shut the secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state to prevent further breakdown of law and order.
The commissioner of police in the state, David Akinremi, said that the command took the decision following violent clash between factional groups of the party in the state.
He said: âYou are aware of the violent clash between the supporters of El-Suldi who was sworn in Abuja as the state chairman of the party and the other faction who called themselves authentic exco of the party."
