Dreaming he was awake, he had stirred the coiled serpent at the base of his spine, inviting it on up before cleaning the apartment. And so, like water embarrassed to boil, he giggled from staring into the sky, so clear and infinite, and hoped to avoid the trap of the dog who peers intently at his master's finger rather than what it's pointing at.

He continually tried to focus on absolutely nothing, which is the only thing that's always there, skipping past mind and matter, and disillusioned with the illusion of permanence.

Detaching and dissociating, he was a perpetually unpeeling banana of consciousness, taking step after step back, sneaking out from under himself, like a cat backing out of a paper bag, getting out of his own way, looking for the one thing he knew he couldn't find. He desperately tried to see sight.

Of course, he always ended up staring at the back of his own head.
