See-glass
when i was little, my dad told me that if i looked through a piece of green sea-glass at just the right time, when the stars were aligned just right, it would turn into see-glass. a piece of see-glass, he said, will allow you to glimpse your future. there was, however, a danger to it. once your future is seen through the glass, it can never be changed. since then, i have checked every piece of green sea-glass that ive found. none have ever turned into see-glass. but that hasnt stopped me from trying.
how many days did i walk the beach scanning the sand for treasures? how many did i see a glint in the sand, only to find a bottle lid or shell? but i did find a handful of green sea-glass, which im saving. some of it is just barely not sharp, some so soft and cloudy it would be a wonder to see through it at all.
although the legend is almost certainly not true, it doesnt stop me from wanting to know. this call of destiny may have called sailors of old onto the mysterious deep. as much as i want to know, im terrified of locking my fate in place. could it have been when shipmen placed foot on the ship that they would be on for months, they felt this same strange pull and repel? “l’appel du vide”, “the call of the void”, that urge to jump off a cliff, into the sea, into the abyss. when you leave the known, you have to leave all at once, there is no half and half.
