Most of the time, I can tell you exactly what I love about a band- what it is that appeals to my aural senses. But there are times where I just can’t pinpoint what draws me in... where I can’t describe to a fellow listener why they should give the group a listen or what keeps me coming back for more. Belle & Sebastian is one of those groups.
I was hooked when my freshman year college roommate introduced me to “Dear, Catastrophe Waitress” (was it the catchy pop beats? the soaring vocals? the weird ass names of songs?) and I’ve come back around to them again with the release of their new album Girls in Peacetime Want to Dance. The music on this new release is as varied in style as the band’s previous five albums combined, but it somehow works. From the synth pop dance tracks to the low key orchestral ballads, I’m obsessed with B&S all over again. And all I can say about it is: it feels so right.
Enjoy this cut. I had a hard time choosing, so I let Spotify choose in it’s limited availability. If you’re in the Denver area, these guys are coming to Red Rocks next week to play with the Colorado Symphony, and I can’t wait!
