[ID: Several images; top two are public art from around Skokie, IL. On the left are statues of what appear to be two penguins striking dramatic poses outside of an otherwise very ordinary apartment building; on the right is part of a mural on the side of Sketchbook Brewery, featuring a cat riding a delivery bike. Bottom image is a bakery case showing a wide variety of small cakes and cookies.]
I took a field trip to Skokie yesterday to check out Kaufman's, a Jewish deli and bakery which I was told had great bagels. I got bagels, cookies (chocolate rugelach and caramel thumbprint) and some fancy mustard, then took a stroll around town. There's a cool brewery nearby, Sketchbook, which had a neat mural on the side facing the train tracks, but it wasn't open yet so I headed home to sample all my goodies.
[ID: An onion bagel with a smear of cream cheese, two chocolate rugelach cookies with a bite taken from one of them, and two shortbread cookies with caramel in the middle.]
Extremely delicious! The bagel was just the right level of chewy, and the cookies were super fresh so they were soft instead of crispy, which I prefer. Can recommend Kaufman's, and they're also very nice people. Next time I'm going to do more recon and get some stuff from the deli, too.
