a moth.
I feel this velvet flapping against the fleshy part of my palm. It’s where my thumb begins, I imagine. Underneath all my skin are gooshy muscles and brittle bones that move when my brain tells them to.
Anyway, the velvety sensation continues. It is soft, but there is no denying the anxiety of its movement. Peaking through the cracks of my fingers, I see it wanting to get out. Must go - it must go. I can almost hear it screaming in the pith path sound, back and forth.
You poor, trapped creature. If only my fingers worked then I would let you free. I would watch you fly away with tears streaming down my face. They are tears of joy, and tears of distress. Saying goodbye is hard, but letting go opens the prison doors.
I can no longer pretend as though my hand isn’t cramping - as though it is now not spasming and held in its own disturbed grip. Frozen now, I am frozen now. I try to move. I will to move.
My furrowed brow does nothing to change the cage I’ve created for us, this moth and I.
Slowly, slowly the flapping stops, and it waits to die.
