SHE LISTENED CLOSELY AS CAROLINE explained the finer points of Mystic Falls’s inner workings and politics. This was insane. Absolutely insane. She had expected to find a lot of things in this mysterious little town, but these things she was hearing were SO FAR from what she had expected, she wasn’t really sure how to react.
“What a quaint little village this is,” she mused. “And here I thought to find some peace and quiet. It seems like there’s some work to do though.” She slowly nodded at Caroline’s question as to the age range of vampires. “It’s… There’s not really a specific RANGE that would make one a baby, but I’d like to compare to myself.” She sat back in her chair and got a little more comfortable. It was so obvious that this poor girl didn’t know much about what she was, about the HISTORY of their species, and for a change, Matilde didn’t mind educating.
“As I said before, I am over six hundred years old, so someone who hasn’t even reached two hundred is a baby. Which is why it’s so surprising this guy has so much sway. He barely knows what it’s like to be a vampire. And even me and my brother - he’s a dick, I don’t like talking about him - are babies compared to the Mikaelson family. I assume you’ve heard of them, I was told they have spent time here. Obviously, there’s nobody older than them, so we’re all babies compared to them, but…” she shrugged. “Like in humans, wisdom comes with age, which - no offense, darling, seeing as you are brand new - means there’s not a lot of it here.”
“Now, you have to tell me how much you know. Or whether you have questions about being of this noble race. I shall not claim to know EVERYTHING, but I’ve been around for a while, so I can probably answer a lot of them.”
There was a naivety about this girl that spoke to Matilde. This was probably the only reason she even entertained teaching her ANYTHING, seeing as the older vampire usually wasn’t in the business of teaching anyone anything. But Caroline… Matilde would probably NEVER admit to it out loud, but the girl reminded her of herself. It reminded Matilde of a time LONG ago when she herself still had some innocence and naivety to her. And those things had led her to BECOME a vampire and then have to figure most of it out on her own. Especially after she had split off from Alexander. The first hundred or so years of her life had not been easy. And despite her usual disposition towards people’s lack of knowledge of what they were and could do, she felt the need to keep what happened to her from happening to Caroline.
“My dear… You might not want to hear this, but… It sounds like you need new friends. If they would blame YOU for Damon getting hurt, despite all he has seemingly done to you… They sound like terrible people. They should stand up for you. Defend you. Snap the bastard’s neck.”
