Starting a small online jewellery business, ByBlaney….
As a child many a summer holiday to Cornwall was spent enjoying days on the bright beaches, whilst most children wanted to build sandcastles, bury their siblings up to their necks in sand or play with the inflatables in the unfortunately cold English sea, I would much rather comb the beach for any special finds. These could include the shells large & small scattered all around, the odd piece of unusual driftwood or my ultimate favourite sea glass!
These stunning sea tumbled sea glass pieces which had been transformed by the sea from their original forms of bottles or jars over the years were such a draw, even at a young age I couldn't stop myself collecting as many pieces as I could find washed in from the waves. They were kept in my bedroom in a jar piling up over the years into a large collection. When I moved from my childhood home to my own home I decided they would work perfectly in my seaside themed bathroom as decoration, however again piled up altogether just in cute glass bottles & jars now - the irony of what they had once been. I still didn't feel they were being used to the full potential showcasing just how wonderful they are. That's when the idea came to mind to turn these sea glass jewels into handmade sea glass jewellery, to be worn and admired as they deserve to be. These were the first ideas of what has now become ByBlaney. I had my own doubts at first it would be possible, I researched and researched time and time again to get ideas and plans but didn't pursue it any further. Yes, I'd made earrings from beads as favours for a wedding which were received far better than ever expected as they were such a simple item & design. It was after a push from a friend I finally bit the bullet & made my very first necklace, it was a relatively simple silver wire design with a large rounded bottle green sea glass piece in the centre, this in turn lead to a pair of matching earrings.
I hadn't spoken to anybody else about this bar that 1 person, however one night as I was going out for a large dinner with family & friends, I decided to wear an emerald green dress and the sea glass earrings were the perfect accessory. That particular night was a massive turning point for what is now ByBlaney, my very own small online jewellery business. From this, people commented on how beautiful the earrings were & asking where I had purchased them from, they were surprised when I explained that I had made them myself, leading to them asking for pieces they could buy. This gave me the confidence to push myself into making more and so ByBlaney came to life.
