今度は南北アメリカの祭りに登場するキャラクターたち。屋外でライティングして撮影されたポートレート写真集である。

フレジェは日本の関取や成人式の着飾った女性たちなどの、特定のコミュニティの人々を同じルールで撮影した作品から出発した写真家。「今度は」というのは、近年はヨーロッパ、日本の古い祭りに登場するキャラクターたちを被写体にしてきたからだ。

この写真集でも、撮影しつくしたのでは、と思えるような量と、同一ルールによるタイポロジー的な写真のクォリティは変わらない。

ページをめくるこちらは図鑑などでこうした撮影手法にはなれているが、図鑑のようなキリヌキ写真ではなく、フレームの中で一つの世界を完結させるのは見るほど簡単ではない。

加えて、広い地域に渡っての撮影ともなれば、リサーチと撮影のアポイントも困難である。そんな苦労話は写真集には書かれていないが、写真集『YOKAI NO SHIMA: 日本の祝祭万物に宿る神々の仮装』（2016、青幻舎）のときにインタビューしたので想像がつく。『YOKAI NO SHIMA』では、日本人のアシスタントが自治体の観光窓口に連絡し、撮影のためのアポイントを取り、扮装してもらって撮影したと言っていた。限られたロケの日程で撮影するためにはそうした事前準備が必要になる。また、写真のクォリティを上げることにも貢献しているだろう。

写真集としては、南北アメリカにアフリカから連れてこられた人たちが伝えてきた古いお祭りについての解説、各キャラクターの説明があり、図鑑としての楽しみ方もできる。

この1冊だけでなく、ヨーロッパの『Wilder Mann: 欧州の獣人-仮装する原始の名残』（2013、青幻舎）、日本の『YOKAI NO SHIMA』（ともに青幻舎）も合わせて見るともっと面白い。人間の想像力の発露であり、時代や場所を超えて人類に共通する無意識の表象でもある。
