As you know two years ago il Maestro Morricone died and I was watching the news on TV. They mentioned his genius as a composer and how his music made history in cinema.

They showed the last bit of the Good the Bad and the Ugly where Tuco screams “sei un gran figlio di puttaaaaaa” (in Italian you are the son of a biiiiiii) and well the words melted perfectly into the music - into the well known “wah wah wah” (I guess in Italian it sounds perfect whereas in English a little less) and I thought to myself “this is some genius shit. It blends epic, comic and music perfectly. Doesn’t look like your boring western with monodimensional characters. I have to see it”.

And then I went into it with no idea what I was going to expect and it changed my life completely.

Can you tell me about masking? (Thats what it's called right?) Please and thanks.

Masking is when you “cut” a character, or maybe object, out of its original environment in order to use it somewhere else. For example, in crossovers, masking is one of the most important tools an editor should use in order to bring two, or several, characters from different movies and shows into the same scene.

There’s two different ways of masking a character;

Manual masking (exists in most editing programs, with the exception of very easy user-friendly ones such as Windows Movie Maker, etc.) is when you use a tool to point and click around the object you need to mask.

This way of masking is the more tedious one of the two, but the result is usually absolute perfect if you take your time to do it right down to the smallest detail.

If you’re masking something that moves, you’ll have to move the mask (sometimes called anchors, depending on the program) along with the object in every frame that it moves. This is part of the reason why manual masking is the method that takes the longest.

Rotobrush masking (exists mostly in Adobe After Effects programs, though it’s possible other professional editing programs have something similar, but I don’t know this for a fact) is when you use an AI program that can, to some degree, recognize what it is you’re trying to mask.

Unlike manual masking, rotobrush masking is capable of doing quite a bit of the work for you. Like shown in the gif below, I only had to do a few clicks on my object and then the rotobrush did the rest, whereas with manual masking, I had to pinpoint everything myself. The majority of the work when rotobrushing is just to perfect it. As you can see in the gif, I’m spending some time removing some dark lines around the character to make it look smoother.

If my character was moving, rather than just a still picture, the rotobrush would be able to move with the character, depending on the amount of movement, and I would only have to check the frames in case the rotobrush would miss something.

This is the faster, and therefore usually more popular masking method. But lots of editors switch between manual masking and rotobrush masking, depending on what needs to be masked.

For example, if your object has something very thin, I’d recommend manually masking the thin part, but rotobrush the rest of the object, as the rotobrush has a hard time picking up on very small strands of hair, needles, pointy nails or so.

While programs such as Sony Vegas Pro ONLY had manual masking as an option, programs such as Adobe After Effects has BOTH manual masking and rotobrush masking as options. This is why the majority of editors have AAE.

Howdy! How do you feel about the new movie coming out soon?

cautiously optimistic! i like the animation shown in trailers so far, the plot summaries sound fun if not as batshit nutters as the original ideas for the story, i wanna see more of baby sponge... and i can’t imagine it’ll be as disappointing as toy story 4, but i certainly wouldn’t wanna get my hopes up too much.

Howdy! This may be so odd to ask. Could you please recommend me some underrated animated movies? I've been hearing about disney sequels. How come no one is talking about them. Is it because folks say they're awful? That's only for me to judge. LOL!

I don’t know what type of animated movies you may be looking for, so I’m gonna throw some different ones at you, and also why I’d recommend them! (Never be afraid of asking me these things, they aren’t odd to me, I’m honored you’d ask me x3)

Also just admitting this right now, I’m probably gonna throw in some movies that aren’t necessarily underrated, but which I just think deserve even MORE attention xD

You asked specifically about Disney sequels, so let me start off with this:

Cinderella 3 - A twist in time

This one is pretty biased coming from me since I was never a big fan of the original Cinderella. I’ve watched loads of different takes on this fairy tale and I just had to accept that this fairy tale just isn’t my thing, it’s not Disney’s fault. But the third Disney movie? THAT ONE I REALLY LIKE.

It’s funny, cute, charming and speaking of charming, the prince is AWESOME. He’s the OG himbo and I adore him for it. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, Charming got more personality in the third movie alone than Cinderella did in all three movies combined. He went from the absolute dullest, most forgettable Disney prince to honestly one of the more adorkable ones. He’s boyfriend goals, not gonna lie xD

Pocahontas 2 - Journey to a new world

I fully understand why a lot of people dislike this sequel, along with a lot of Disney sequels. In my opinion though, it’s one of the most enjoyable ones. Now, is the love story as amazing as the first? No. There’s no denying that when it comes to a love story, the one with John Smith just IS more romantic along with tragic. Pocahontas is one of the few Disney movies with a bittersweet ending. With that being said, I love that they, in the sequel, kinda taught yet another important lesson to children; Your first love might not be your last.

The first movie taught us that love can conquer a lot, but your roots and your home can be more important to you, like Pocahontas showed us by staying with her tribe and saying goodbye to John Smith, and even denying him to stay with her for his own health and safety. The sequel once again reminds us that as much as John Smith and Pocahontas loved each other, they were much too different. Smith wanted to travel the world, Pocahontas wanted to stay with her family. They belonged in different worlds.

And honestly? That’s really important to teach children. That you can love someone deeply, but maybe something in your relationship would make you unhappy in the long run. Should Pocahontas have given up her family to travel with Smith? Should Smith have given up his life-long dream of traveling and seeing the world? No. And that’s why they couldn’t be together, Rolfe or no Rolfe.

Lion king 1½

If you like Timon and Pumba, meta stuff and basically some humorous takes on the original Lion King, the third movie should be right up your alley. It’s genuinely a lot of fun watching Timon and Pumba watch their own POV in a cinema of what happened in the original story. It won’t teach you anything solid nor is it particularly deep, but it definitely shows you a good time with some classic Timon and Pumba humor xD

The jungle animal

Yes, I went ahead and MADE these gifs of the movie cause now that I have the chance to recommend not just one of my favorite childhood movies, but a DANISH one as well, I’m gonna make sure I show you some of my favorite shots from this movie... x’D

I’ve said it before, and I’ll gladly remind people again that the English dubbed version is utter TRASH. Not only did they change the characters’ personalities, not only did they CENSOR a lot of things that really didn’t need to be censored, but they cut away a total of 3 minutes of the movie. The charm, originality and unique tone is gone and turned into some animated B movie clearly made by people who think American children are somehow less sophisticated than Danish ones cause why else would they remove any type of subtlety and replace it with just... saying EXACTLY what the characters think at all times and dumbing the whole thing down and just...

Yeah, I’m making a video about this movie on my Ayla Sky channel, I’ll make sure to share it here cause if you’ve ever watched the English dub of this, I DEMAND that you watch my comparison video of it because I REFUSE to let people think that my fellow Danes made something that stupid.

ANYWAY! The Danish one is worth a watch, allow me to prove that once I’ve made that video x’D

Strange Magic

I’m aware of the bad rep this movie has gotten, but I gotta be honest here... I personally disagree with a lot of the criticism it’s gotten, or at least I’m not nearly as bothered by it as others are. It’s also worth noting that A LOT of the people I’ve seen criticizing this movie has also openly admitted to... having never watched it. They’ve just heard some bad stuff about it, perhaps from famous critics, and then decided to have the same opinion.

If you watched this movie and you disliked it, that’s fine. I’m just saying this; don’t base your opinion on what OTHER people’s opinions are. You can’t judge something if you don’t have the full picture. And if nothing else, I think people can at least enjoy the gorgeous animation.

Hey Arnold! - The jungle movie

It’s no secret that I am a huge Hey Arnold! fans ever since I was 18 years old and first saw Nostalgia Critic saying very little positive things about the show, based on the fact that he had only watched the first episode x’D But his description of Helga Pataki is what got me into the show, and I quickly became a hardcore fan, writing TONS of fanfiction with one of my only canon ships, Shortaki, and also made a ton of videos on my YouTube channel. I stayed up way past midnight to watch the jungle movie for the first time on Nickelodeon and I wasn’t the only one.

The movie gave us everything Craig Bartlett promised us and then some more. Even if you’ve never watched the show, this movie is a thorough joy. Will there be a few easter eggs and jokes that’ll fly over your head? Probably. But I’d say that it’s very easy to follow and I imagine a lot of kids watched this movie before watching the show, given that the show ran in the 90s.

It’s worth a watch, without a doubt.

Chicken run

This movie is... a ride. It’s funny while also being pretty fucking dark. If you ain’t vegan, this might make you change your mind. It sure made a lot of kids skip out on chicken for a long time after watching this movie.

With that being said, it’s not exactly clever commentary or anything, it is mostly just a pretty fun time with the occasional dark or even heartbreaking moment. The stop-motion is pretty great, especially considering the time it came out, but it hasn’t aged the best I’ll admit. Still definitely worth a watch though, it’s pretty funny and has some great songs in its soundtrack.

A silent voice

I watched this movie for the first time back when I was studying sign language. It was something we showed our Deaf teachers and I swear to god, every teacher and student were bawling their eyes out multiple times through this movie.

This movie is an emotional masterpiece. It deals with lots of mature subjects, such as bullying, regret, suicide, being disabled and so much more. It’s so unique in the way it tells its story that it really sticks with you for a long time.

And also, fyi, it’s one of the few Japanese animated movies where I would say the English dub does amazingly well. As someone who has watched A LOT of English dubs, after watching the original Japanese ones, I’d like to think I feel pretty sure in saying which dubs are worth it and which are not. This one is worth it. So if you don’t want to watch it in the Japanese original version with English subtitles, I’d say the English dub will give you the overall same experience.

As a side note, for anyone watching anime and wants to watch English dubs as well; 4kids entertainment (Mew Mew Power as an example) are shit at dubbing Japanese shows while Funimation (Ouran high school host club as an example) are great at it. 4kids entertainment will change the characters’ personalities, names, “censor” things and dumb shows down because apparently American kids can’t handle mature subjects like Japanese kids can??? While Funimation won’t change shit, they’ll stay mostly true to the original with no censoring and no dumbing down.

Paranorman

A horror movie for children, that was the concept for this movie. And honestly? It’s really good, not just as a somewhat scary movie, but also because it’s hilarious and has a rather touching message that really deserves more credit. I’m a huge fan of stop-motion and Paranorman is easily on my top 5 favorite stop-motion movies. It’s thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish, and I don’t even want to talk about it too much, because I don’t want to give anything away.

But let me just point this one thing out; it was one of the first animated movies to ever have an ACTUAL, undeniable gay character, like shown in the second gif. There was no subtlety, no guessing, he was gay, plain and simple. Yes, it’s a bit of a punchline, but still, it was BIG back when this was made.

South Park - Bigger, longer and uncut

... Yes, I’m serious.

I was one of those people who really hated South Park pretty much ever since I first saw ANYTHING from it. Then the game came out, and back then I was a Pewdiepie fan so when he started playing it, I watched the playthrough under protest. Soon, I caught myself waiting impatiently for the next episode cause I was honestly enjoying it. And I wound up buying the game, loved it even more and then... nothing. I still refused to check out the show, out of total immature stubbornness.

Then the second game out, I loved that even more, and I finally gave in and watched the show backwards. As in, I watched the newest season first, then the second newest etc. Cause I realized that the South Park I saw 15 years ago was nothing like the new South Park, and I didn’t want to have to go through the toilet humor before I could get to the clever, raunchy and actual interesting commentary.

This movie IS in the toilet humor-centered days, but it does have clever commentary if you know a bit about the backstory of it. So, yeah, I’d say this is worth a watch. Give SP a chance if you never have, see this as a sign to check it out if you’ve been on the fence x’D
