🎹 — playing an instrument
Mai’s mother felt learning to play an instrument was a vital skill for a proper lady to learn.
But, Mai is not skilled at all. She is better off listening. Music is the only class she didn’t get a perfect mark in.

“Ladies, Future Industries wants you! Are you interested in an exciting and rewarding career? Come on down to one of our recruitment offices and schedule an interview. We offer expert and entry level positions. Don’t wait; come and seize your future!”
This is what lead you to board a train bound for Republic City’s bustling (and borderline overwhelming) industrial district. Here, the blocks are concisely squared and the fog rolls low over the street. The Future Industries tower casts a divisive shadow across the main thoroughfare and juts above the skyline uncontested.
Inside, someone with an eye for gilding and glamor has constructed a plaza worthy of a technological sultan. The marble floors reflect an ethereal dreamscape of the cogged and geared ceiling murals, and the secretary that meets you at the desk looks like she has come alive from the centerfold of a fashion magazine.
You take a number, you wait, and then you are politely ushered to a golden lift encased in whimsical filigree. The polished steel doors offer you one last glance at your reflection before you meet The Big Boss.
Welcome to Future Industries.

2. Something about your own family’s history
Honestly, don’t know much about my family’s history, though my aunt is really big on genealogy. I do know that the progenitor of my surname came across the ocean from Germany in 1875, having figured out 4 years after the Franco-Prussian War that there was gonna be another one of those, and started out working on the railroad in America. Memory kind of blanks out but eventually my paternal grandfather advanced to being a full partner at a law firm, so yay social mobility!
14. A historical form of a language or dead language you wish you could speak/hear spoken
It’s kind of funny; all the big historical C Drama productions are composed and recorded in Mandarin, when iirc, Old and Classical Chinese sounded very different from modern Mandarin, which is heavily influenced by Jurchen and Mongol languages, in addition to straight using different words for shit. Different tonal structure, glottal stops, different grammar. So you get a situation where the great patriot Yue Fei is commanding troops fighting the Jurchens with Jurchen influenced grammar.
16. A piece of heraldry, historical symbol, badge, flag, e.t.c. you like/associate with
I really like the flag of the Joseon Dynasty in Korea; has a unique take on the Taiji (yin-yang), as well as the Eight Trigrams arranged in the Later Heaven formation.

Honorable mention goes to the short-lived Empire of Vietnam, with the Fire Trigram banded across the flag, which I mention purely because I am Fire Nation trash. Also honorable mention to the flag of the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force and Imperial Japanese Navy, because goddamn the aesthetic
