Philippines - At around eight in the morning of October 15, 2013, a killer earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 alarmed the residents of Bohol, destroying historic structures and leaving at least 85 dead. At that same moment, it's neighboring provinces such as Cebu, Davao, Negros, Masbate, and the entire Panay Island were also shocked by its massive intensity. Immediate reports from radio, television, search engines, and even social networking sites have spread but little do people know about how an earthquake starts and what to do in case of an emergency. When the Earth's crust releases energy, it forms seismic waves that result to earthquakes. Earthquakes are usually brought about by a geological fault rupture; however, it can also be caused by volcanic eruptions, landslides, mine blasts, and nuclear testings. The magnitude is measured by what is called a Richter scale, wherein a score of 3 and below is weak and a score of 7 and above is already considered potentially dangerous, considering the depth. On the other hand, the intensity is measured by a Mercalli scale, wherein the more shallow the earthquake, the higher the damage it can cause. To date, Japan's 9.0 magnitude earthquake last 2011 has given the most damaging effects to both nature and humanity as it has the strongest intensity.
