random, but, how do you chose a pose for a character? 00
Well anon, when you wanna draw a character, ask yourself these questions: 1. What kind of personality does this character have? 2. What emotions do I want them to express? 3. How do I convey their personality and express the emotions? The answer for the third is question is simple - body language! ~ About the previous questions: What does the personality of the character got to do with poses? Well to put it simply - a person who is confident, powerful and has a lot of force will have a different posture and way of holding themselves than a person who is timid and shy. It’s like facial expressions - if you feel good, you will smile. The other is also true btw - if you smile, you feel good. And if you feel confident, your body will express that. And likewise, if you pose in a confident way, you will feel confident. And so thinking a little bit more about the personality of the character will give you first ideas on how to draw them.
Here an example of how important your posture is (the first 15 seconds of the video)
Now this is a funny scene, but what Mushu tells Mulan is right - he tries to teach how to walk with more confidence and authority, and having the shoulders back, chest high, feet apart, head up, is exactly how to walk a power walk. It’s little things like that that can make a huge difference in how the character is perceived. And than there is the question of what emotions you want your character to express. And that can be tricky, because it can change depending on the characters personality. A usually fearless person may show fear differently than someone who is always in a state of being scared. And the level of expression also features into this - a stoic person will show less than an expressive person. My general advise is: Make a pose yourself. Put yourself in the mind of the character and try a bit of acting. Play with different emotions and eventually you’ll get a good idea of how to pose :D
And I cannot understate how important it is to know the character! Here is a drawing of mine that I perceive as failed:
This is Megatron from Beast Wars and I drew it before I had watched the show. Now after I’ve done exactly that, I would draw him completely differently! This drawing doesnt reflect his character AT ALL. Infact, it shows barely anything, except maybe that he’s a bad guy, but there is no personality in the picture, because I had no idea what kind of personality he got. And like that the pose is pretty lame and generic. Compare it to this, an OC of mine of whom I know full well what kind of personality he got.
I didn’t even think much about the pose, I just know he’s a giddy and and self-loving little fool, the rest was easy. Hope this was helpful ~ Always consider emotions and personality :D
