On our walking tour of Takada, we stopped by “Takada Sekai-Kan Theater,” which is said to be (one of?) the oldest operating movie theaters in Japan. Since it’s opening in 1911 as the local playhouse, it has lived through several incarnations as a popular movie theater, an adult movie theater, and now, as a community-supported landmark, runs art and foreign films as well as music and other live events. Build in the Meiji Era when Western architecture was the rage, you can still appreciate the craftsmanship in the ceiling or enjoy a seat in the balcony. A few years ago, we at the school I CAN screened the movie “Hafu” (“Half”) about growing up bi-racially in Japan. We screened the movie three times that day, the kids sold snacks in the lobby, and more than 109 people joined us for the day. With a new cafe next door, it’s nice to see this part of “old towne” enjoying some new foot traffic. #joetsu #takada #gangi #sekaikan (at 高田世界館)
