Doug/Dylas: Established Relationship

“Will you stop fidgeting?” Dylas whispered to Doug as he yet again tried to readjust the itchy fabric of the fancy clothes he was being made to wear. 

“Ugh, aren’t you uncomfortable?” Doug asked. Dylas rolled his eyes, leaning down to Doug’s level.

“Look, Arthur was nervous about this whole affair. You getting all fidgety is not going to help,” he said. Doug grimaced. 

“I know, I know,” he said, repressing the urge to tug at his collar. “So he’s showing off Lest’s princely skills to the royals, I get it, but why are we here?” 

“Hush,” Dylas said, taking a sip from the clear crystal glass a waiter had brought him. “It’ll be over soon enough.” Doug sighed, eyeing Arthur and Lest from the other side of the ballroom. Lest seemed as uncomfortable as he was, maybe more so, but Arthur was in his element, bowing gracefully and leading Selphia’s prince through the crowds to be introduced. Doug scanned the crowd. Where had that waiter gone? He could use a little alcohol with how this night was going. 

He followed Dylas around, talking to Nancy and Jones before heading to a more secluded corner. Dylas wasn’t a talker, so mingling was out, and Doug brushed him off when Dylas tentatively suggested dancing. No one needed to be subjected to that. He leaned against a a tall marble column, looking up at the intricate ceiling and suppressing a groan. 

“This wouldn’t be so bad is it wasn’t so damn boring,” Doug said. Dylas sighed. He looked around the room, then took Doug by the arm.

“Wha--”

“Shush,” Dylas said, leading him down a long hall, turning off to the side, away from the prying eyes of the party goers. 

“What are we--” Doug asked.

“I said shush,” Dylas said, pushing Doug against the wall. He leaned down, catching Doug’s lips in a heated kiss, pinning him to the wall as his hands snaked into his hair. Doug sunk into it, pulling Dylas closer (he’d be damned if he stood on his tiptoes to kiss the other man) and wrapping his arms around Dylas’ neck. The kiss went on with wandering hands and soft sounds, quietly shushed between secret giggles. There was something particularly juvenile about making out in the back at a party, but Doug couldn’t complain. He’d take this over the tinkling music and fake smiles out in the grand hall. 

When they finally pulled apart, they were breathless and mussed, but grinning like fools as they helped each other get back to rights. Dylas ran a hand through Doug’s hair, smoothing it.

“Ready to go back?” he asked. Doug rolled his eyes. 

“Ready as I’ll ever be,” he said. Dylas hooked their arms and lead them back to the floor. As they returned, Lest spotted them across the room.

“You think they think they’re being sneaky?” He asked Arthur, nudging him with his elbow.

“I think they’re probably very proud of themselves,” Arthur replied. “As long as they’re not bickering in front of everyone, I can’t complain.”

“Yeah,” Lest said. “Now how much longer is this party?” Arthur resisted the urge to rub his temples.

“Not much, hopefully. Not much.”

Occasionally there was a strange sense of deja vu going about his life. Dylas would walk down the streets of Selphia and swear he was back in his own time, until one of the townspeople came by, reminding him he wasn’t when he thought he was. It always sent his head reeling, like he was being pulled through time in a instant, forcing him to readjust all over again. Some days were worse than others, and sometimes he simply couldn’t deal with it all.

For once, he was having a wonderful day. He had spent the day fishing, the lull of the waves of the lake and the sun shining overhead had him in great spirits. He walked through the town to the plaza, wondering what he should do with the rest of his day when he saw her. A girl about his age, with long flowing hair and round, gray eyes. His breath caught. For a moment, he nearly ran to her, stopping a step short before it hit him. It wasn’t her. Her lips didn’t have the same purse to them, her face not quite right. She’s gone. That was a long time ago, he reminded himself. He turned, taking the path back to the restaurant, not turning back to look at the girl who looked so much like the past he tried to forget.

He thought back to her, the first girl he had ever been sweet on. He thought about the night she had first held his hand, how he had blushed and stuttered like a complete fool, and she had laughed her musical laugh. He wondered what ever happened to her, if she had lived a good life. Biting the inside of his cheek, he decided it was better not to dwell on it. 

He went into his room, closing the door behind him, shutting out all thoughts of the past. It did nothing but hurt him.

Porcoline/Volkanon: Established Relationship

Nights at the restaurant were usually bustling with both tourists and townspeople alike, keeping Porcoline busy with cooking. He was at his happiest in the kitchen, stirring up whatever recipe had caught the fancy of a adventurous tourist. He tasted the dishes as he went, making sure they were top quality before sending them off with Dylas to the hungry customer. By the end of the night, he was tired, but content, and as open hours wound down, he cleaned his station, as he snacked on whatever ingredients were left over. As he worked, he became aware of a presence behind him. If he hadn’t spent months with the other man, he’d have guessed it was just Dylas with the dishes, but he knew Volkanon’s quiet footsteps anywhere.

“Darling!” he cried, turning toward the other man. Volkanon smiled, opening his arms wide in a quiet invitation, one that Porcoline could never turn down. He embraced Volkanon, leaning up for a kiss, which Volkanon was more than happy to supply. 

“How was work, my sweet?” Volkanon asked, running his fingers through Porcoline’s silky hair. Porcoline smiled wide. 

“Wonderful!” he said. “Such energy tonight!” Volkanon chuckled deep in his chest.

“You say that every night,” he laughed. Porcoline placed a finger to Volkanon’s nose.

“That’s because it’s true every night,” he scolded, his smile still stretching across his face. He left Volkanon’s embrace to place the last of his mess in the sink, before turning back to his lover. 

“So,” he drawled, walking slowly back to Volkanon, “any plans for tonight?” Volkanon smiled.

“I was thinking of taking you out for a picnic by the moonlight,” Volkanon said. 

“Ah, my darling, you know just how to make my heart flutter,” Porcoline said, returning to Volkanon’s arms. Volkanon held him close, standing more than a head taller than him, wrapping his strong arms around him.

“I’d do anything for you. A picnic is a small gesture of my love,” he said. Porcoline looked up at him, his eyes shimmering in the light of the kitchen. Volkanon held his gaze, tears pricking at his eyes.

“You are so beautiful,” he sniffled. Porcoline searched his pocket for his handkerchief, dabbing at Volkanon’s eyes. 

“Now, now, my darling, you can sing my praises when we get out of here,” he said with a grin. Dylas entered the room, just then, carrying a tower of dishes.

“Oh come on you two, can’t you be gross somewhere else? People eat here,” he joked, not unkindly.

“We plan to,” Porcoline said, resisting the urge to stick out his tongue. “We plan to.”
