Yeah, I think if you have only seen the movie, then Denethor probably doesn’t seem like a very interesting or relatable character and you won’t want to read much fic about him. They basically removed all of the in-story explanations for why he did what he did in the movie, and left out his very interesting initial interactions with Gandalf, which weren’t exactly friendly, but he didn’t start out with outright accusing Gandalf of conspiring against him. In the companion I’m reading they also mention at the part where he thinks Faramir is dying and Pippin expresses compassion for him that this helps the reader also feel compassion for him even though he’s been a very prickly person so far, but in the movie Pippin doesn’t express any understanding for anything Denethor does, which is understandable since Denethor is kind of an incomprehensible crazy person in the movie. So, I think most of the audience for a Denethor-centric fic would have to be book fans, without even getting into the fact that if you haven’t read Appendix A you probably don’t even know that Denethor has met Aragorn before.
I also thought for about five seconds that this would be a fun fic to write, and then remembered that a) I haven’t written fic in years, b) I’ve never actually written any LOTR fic at all, and c) I work 40 hours a week now. I would definitely read and comment on any fic like this that might get written, though, just putting that out there to the world at large.
