Ive designed a few other things but my other favorite is my stellar vest I made last summer

It was my first time working with 100% cotton yarn so I didnt expect it to shrink vertically so much so its a bit more cropped than I was expecting but I designed the Stellar Jay graphic myself, there is a flower graphic on the back as well, and all the buttons are vintage from my lesbian moms' moms and purposefully mismatched as if a Jay had picked up shiny objects in the woods to collect :D (I do have a vlog for making this on my youtube channel I can send the link if your interested:) )

Im currently working on a second piece in this "corvid collection" which is gonna be a cardigan with ravens on the front, here's what I have for it so far

Im knitting it in the round and then will cut (steek) up the center when its done to make it a cardigan. The yarn is an alpaca/Peruvian highland wool blend which is super soft and going to be perfectly warm yet lightweight for fall/spring.

And the last thing I wanna show off is based on a pattern I saw a few years ago but had disappeared off the internet by the time I went to knit it

1) Check how your drafting book works.  Some drafting books work from a base block or a rough “if your chest is X, your hips are Y” proportional guideline.  If your body is wildly out of line from their base block, you might find that the end result doesn’t fit you well.  Some drafting books require special curved rulers (which you can often substitute with a standard French curve ruler) or rulers that have 1 inch equaling a smaller size for different proportions.

2) Let’s grab an example.  You found William Albert Work’s book on Archive.org, and fell in love with the blanket skirt on page 34.  Judging by the mention of the “scale” and “draft according to hip measure,” the book originally came with a ruler.  However, let’s take a look at the skirt.

3) If the numbers are for a “generic” size, then you could add them up and get an approximate waist size of 32.  How do we customize this to your own waist size?  Draw a point and a right angle line, make the 3 and 4 inch line and then the point at the 6 inch line.  Lay a measuring tape at a curve from your initial line down to the 6 inch line at the length of half of your waist (+ 1 - 2 inches for ease and the fold of the fabric) + 2 inches (for the dart.)  The dart size is determined by the difference between your hips and your waist.  Since we want the skirt to fit loosely around your hips and smoothly to your waist, a dart on each side cinches in the skirt.  If your waist is 40 and your hips are 42, a 1/2 inch dart might work better for you.  If your waist is 40 and your hips are 50, a 2 inch dart might work better for you.

4) The dart length is going to be the point from your waist down to a hair above the widest part of your hips.  “H” makes sense as being your hips (average ease for this time is 4 inches and average length from waistband to hips was 5,) but 7 inches means the skirt is probably intended to sit on a very high waistline.  So, let’s look at the overlap.  That looks like it’s a 3 inch overlap on either side, with the point of the triangle ending up at 12 inches down from the top.  There is a chance the skirt might gap slightly, but since we have your entire waist on the waist band, it should be minimal.  The 1/2 H at the bottom likely indicates the side of the skirts, and a suggestion to check that you have that distance from that spot to the back of the skirt.  The slightly lower line on the back is likely to correct for wearing a bum pad or the front (cut on the bias) stretching over time to be longer than the back.

5) This skirt was likely intended to be cut from a boiled wool blanket, so there would be no need to hem the bottom or the sides.  27 is approximately the length I would need for a long skirt without hem allowance, but 35 makes no sense.  It likely was a number used to indicate knee length on a scale for skirt length, but it does not make sense as a raw number.  I made a version of this skirt out of green corduroy, and added a waistband to it due to the scraps of fabric I was working with.  The edges got bound in bias tape, a button was placed at point 12, and some snaps were used to close the skirt from top to bottom.  It worked just fine.  You could probably add a hem line, and then cut an angled facing for the front flap.
