Self Insert Positivity Day: The 4th One
I’ll be answering the prompts laid out by the awesome @robotarmjokes for the 4th Self Insert Positivity Day. Sit tight, it’s going to be a long one.
What got you into self inserting? Was it something you’ve always done, or something you were inspired to do? Everyone has an origin story, and I’d love to know yours!
It actually goes back into my elementary school days when I made oddball fan fics in school to keep me from getting bored in school: when you’re relatively well in school, it can be boring sometimes just sitting in class & taking notes. I was oblivious to the whole idea of self shipping and self inserting, since I was trying to avoid putting myself into the main character and yet the ideas still form in my head for a long time. But it wasn’t until I got back into Tumblr when I fell into self shipping hell and I also learned that showing and not telling is not the way to go as my Young Adult Literature, Poetry, and Creative Writing professor told me otherwise in college.
For some of us, aesthetic is key. Do you have a theme or an aesthetic for your self insert content (Please do not include ships/FOs!)?
Mari is basically what happens if you blend modern preppy girl, dorky librarian, awkward nerd vibes, and being surrounded by madness into a proverbial blender. Flowers, tea, books, writing, and stones are among the things that speak of her. Glass is also another element for her universe involving defying fate among canon characters like shattering glass. Red, yellow, blue, white, pink, and silver & gold are among the colors that scream of her. I have made this main aesthetic for her some time ago.
What’s your favourite way of self inserting? Do you like to write, or draw, or make content via other means? (They’re all valid, even if you don’t make content and keep it to yourself!)
I primarily do writing a lot, along with reblogging posts and stuff related to Mari. I have also done some playlists and made some moodboards whenever I’m in the mood for them.
Friends are very important. Have you made any friends within the community?
Probably a lot, but the bigger ones include @husband-of-lucoa @plucky-belmondo @skipper-self-shipper @self-shipping-angel @ghoul-bellhop29 @jenny-snoopers-world @astralshipper @superheroshippinq @goldenworldsabound @angelfairy-ships and @jaklovemail. There are also people I know of at the Self-Shippers United Discord server too.
What’s your favourite thing about self inserting or self shipping?
Both of them got my creativity to grow more fully again (I was burnt out from college especially after somewhat ‘under-performing’ in Creative Writing with my professor’s too lofty standards in place (1.5 in my university’s grading standards is still good, but I felt as if I had let her down to some extent, especially since I was under her tutelage for 3 years)) and making a friend blush whenever there is a new f/o on the horizon for them to gush about.
